Bucknell's Varsity Lightweight Eight Finishes Fourth at IRA National Championship

CHERRY HILL, N.J. (Cooper River) - Part of a competitive six-boat field in the Grand Final at the IRA National Championship Regatta, the Bucknell women's rowing varsity lightweight eight placed fourth on Saturday. The Bison recorded a time of 6 minutes, 43.693 seconds, just over a second behind third-place Stanford.
Bucknell, which was competing in the Grand Final for the third consecutive year, easily finished ahead of Princeton (6:46.423) and Radcliffe (6:51.801). Radcliffe had finished ahead of the Bison in both the heat and the Repechage on Friday, while Princeton won Friday morning's heat to advance directly to the Grand Final.
Wisconsin claimed the national title for the fourth time in five years, defeating second-place Georgetown by open water. Bucknell, which won the first national championship in school history at last year's IRA Regatta, is the only team other than Wisconsin to claim the lightweight national title over the last five years.
The same six teams have competed in the Grand Final each of the last two years. Last year's final results were: Bucknell, Princeton, Wisconsin, Radcliffe, Stanford and Georgetown.
"I was most impressed with the way the members of the boat approached the three-week training period for this weekend," commented Bison head coach Stephen Kish. "I like the way they progressed from the heat to the semis to the finals. It was an incredible finish and I am very happy with the performance."
The Bucknell women's rowing team will next be in action when it travels to the Henley Women's Regatta in England later this month.
