LEWISBURG, Pa. - Bucknell baseball senior Mathew Wilson (Toronto, Ontario/Northern S.S.) was selected to the College Baseball Foundation's National All-Star Lineup yesterday evening after carrying the Bison to their first ever NCAA Tournament victory, a 7-0 upset over host Florida State last Friday evening at the Tallahassee Regional.
Wilson was named a unanimous selection to the Tallahassee All-Regional Team at the conclusion of Regional play on Monday and joins classmate Jason Buursma (Seattle, Wash./Lakeside School) and sophomore John Avanzino (Manhasset, N.Y./Manhasset) as members of the Orange and Blue who were previously honored as a part of weekly National All-Star Lineups this spring.
Wilson, who improved to 6-1 with last Friday's victory over the No. 4 national seed Seminoles, hurled his Bucknell record-breaking fifth career shutout, including his first one that last nine innings, as the Bison became the first team to hold FSU scoreless since last year's NCAA Regional. Wilson walked two and struck out three as he helped the Bison to their 30th win of the season and ended the Seminoles' 15-game winning streak in opening round NCAA Regional games. The No. 1-ranked offense in the nation, FSU has averaged nearly 10 runs per game this spring.
A team co-captain, Wilson was a Second Team All-Patriot League selection this year. He finished his career with a 13-8 record and 156 strikeouts. His 73 strikeouts this spring were a career high and he narrowly missed breaking the Bison single-season record for strikeouts per nine innings.
The Bison finished 2008 with the second-highest wins total in school history at 30-24-2 and won their fourth Patriot League championship, earning a Patriot League record fourth trip to the NCAA Tournament.
