LEWISBURG, Pa. - One year after having five rowers cited for their academics, the Bucknell women's rowing team had six student-athletes named National Scholar-Athletes by the Collegiate Rowing Coaches Association (CRCA) earlier this week. Seniors Sophie Bird (Lincolndale, N.Y./Somers) and Jennie Trayes (Hawley, Pa./Wallenpaupack) as well as sophomores Devon Mitchell (Medford, N.J./Shawnee), Meghan O'Reilly (Willington, Conn./Edwin O. Smith), Elizabeth Regan (Smithtown, N.Y./St. Anthony's) and Mary Wilson (Downingtown, Pa./Downingtown West) were the six Bison honored.
The CRCA recognizes student-athletes who are at least sophomore standing, have a cumulative grade-point average of at least 3.50 and have been members of the institution's NCAA or IRA eligible boats for a minimum of 75% of the spring season.
Bird and Trayes were both National Scholar-Athletes last year, while the four sophomores were in their first year of eligibility for the honor.
Bucknell's six honorees spanned each of the team's varsity boats with varsity eight (Bird, Trayes), second varsity eight (Mitchell, Regan, Wilson) and varsity four (O'Reilly) represented.
The six scholar-athlete award winners have helped the Bison women's rowing team to yet another outstanding campaign in 2008. Bucknell won its third consecutive Patriot League title and won its second straight crowns at both the Murphy Cup and ECAC Metro Championship. The varsity eight won the Knecht Cup, while Michigan, Ohio State, Tennessee and Virginia dotted a very difficult schedule. Additionally, the Bison competed at the Eastern Sprints for the first time in program history and took eighth place out of 18 teams in the very competitive field.
Bucknell's 2008 campaign will conclude with the IRA Lightweight National Championships (June 6-7, Cherry Hill, N.J.) and the Henley Women's Regatta (June 20-22, Henley, England)
