LEWISBURG, Pa. - The entire Bucknell women's rowing team competed together at Eastern Sprints for the first time in program history on Sunday and posted some impressive finishes as each of the six boats that raced advanced to at least the petite finals against some of the top teams in the Northeast, including 2007 national champion Brown and the rest of the Ivy League.
Five of Bucknell's boats placed among the top-three in their petite finals, with the varsity four winning and the varsity eight claiming second, just a fraction of a second off the pace.
The Bison varsity four won its petite final with open water between it and second-place Boston University. Bucknell was just over one second behind second-place Dartmouth and a berth in the grand final in the heat.
The varsity eight also had a remarkable performance, taking second in the petite final. The Bison (6:31.270) were just 0.1 seconds behind first-place Dartmouth (6:31.170) in a very close race.
Five of Bucknell's boats finished ahead of Patriot League foe Navy, including the novice eight, which defeated the Mids for the first time in program history. The novice eight was second in the petite final, while Navy was fifth, nearly four seconds behind.
The Bison second varsity eight (3rd) and second varsity four (3rd) also posted top-three finishes in their petite finals. The second varsity eight was neck-and-neck with runner-up Penn for much of the race. The second novice eight was fourth in the grand final.
"Taking our entire team to Eastern Sprints was a memorable experience," said Bucknell head coach Stephen Kish. "We were proud to face some of the best teams in the country and have some success. We exceeded our expectations and are happy the whole team was able to have a strong showing in its final competition together in 2008."
The Eastern Sprints, which Brown won by taking the gold in the varsity eight, second varsity eight and novice eight grand finals, was the last full-team competition for Bucknell in 2008. However, the Bison lightweight eight will compete at the IRA National Championships June 6-7, while the Henley Women's Regatta will take place June 20-22.
