CHERRY HILL, N.J. (Cooper River) - Bolstered by a 14-second victory in the varsity eight, the Bucknell women's rowing team claimed its third consecutive Patriot League title Sunday morning on the Cooper River. The Bison tied Navy atop the standings with 27 points, but Bucknell won the varsity eight over the second-place Mids to break the tie.

"The Patriot League keeps getting stronger and Navy put on a great performance," praised Bison head coach Stephen Kish after his team's victory. "I am proud of our team all the way from the novice four to the varsity eight and am looking forward to the next few weeks of competition."

Bucknell's route to its third title in the four years of Patriot League competition was a little different than the past two years. The Bison had swept all three races en route to their 2007 championship, and claimed the varsity eight and varsity four races in 2006. This year Bucknell's varsity four and second varsity eight finished second to Navy. In order to claim the title, the Bison needed to win the varsity eight.

The varsity eight, which earned its third consecutive Boat of the Year honor, came through and defeated Navy by nearly 15 seconds. The Bison crossed the line in 6:51.65, while the Mids timed in at 7:06.51. In 2006 Bucknell won the varsity eight race by just over two seconds and last year it won by five seconds.

While Bucknell finished second in the varsity four and second varsity eight, it was within five seconds of the Mids in both events.

Scoring for the events is done in a 5-4-3-2-1 order for the varsity four, 10-8-6-4-2 for the second varsity eight and 15-12-9-6-3 for the varsity eight.

Bucknell and Navy tied at the top of the standings with 27 points, while Holy Cross finished third with 15. Colgate (13) and Lehigh (7) rounded out the five-team standings.

In addition to the three championship races, there were novice eight, second varsity four and lightweight eight events. The Bison novice four and second novice eight also competed. Navy won the novice eight and second varsity four events with Bucknell finishing second in each. The Bison then closed out the day by claiming the lightweight eight by 30 seconds over Lehigh.

While the Patriot League Championship is complete, Bucknell's 2007-08 season still has the better part of two months remaining. The Bison varsity boats will compete at the ECAC Championships next Sunday, May 4, back on the Cooper River.
