PHILADELPHIA, Pa. (Schuylkill River) - The Bucknell women's rowing team sent three novice boats - the novice eight, novice four and novice lightweight eight - to the Dad Vail Regatta this past weekend and had a successful showing at the largest collegiate regatta in the country. The highlight of the regatta was the novice eight finishing third in the finals, which was its best-ever showing at the prestigious event. Additionally, the novice lightweight eight finished second in the finals, giving Bucknell two medal-winning boats.
A total of 31 teams were entered in the heats of the novice eight and Bucknell won its heat by more than 10 seconds over second-place Purdue to advance to the semifinals. The Bison then took second in their semifinal, earning a berth in the final. There, Bucknell finished third in the six-boat race in a time of 6:46.665. Only Grand Valley and Saint Joseph's were faster.
The novice lightweight eight competed in the finals as well and took the silver medal. It finished second to California.
Against some tough competition, the novice four placed fourth in its heat on Friday, rounding out the list of Bucknell boats that were in action over the weekend.
"We are very proud of all the first-year rowers who competed this weekend," mentioned Bison head coach Stephen Kish. "They represented the entire team very well in Philadelphia this weekend. It was rewarding to see the novice eight post the best Dad Vail Regatta finish in program history."
The Bison varsity crews will be back in action Sunday, May 18, at the Eastern Sprints. Bucknell will be sending a full complement of boats to the event for the first time.
