
Bucknell Women's Tennis Drops Match, 5-2, To Delaware On Senior Day

LEWISBURG, Pa. - Just two days after a runner-up finish at the Patriot League Tournament, the Bucknell women's tennis team returned home for Senior Day, falling by a score of 5-2, to Delaware, Tuesday afternoon. Senior Captain Caitlin Baffa (Dix Hills, N.Y./Half Hollow Hills High School East) was honored by Head Coach Rebecca Helt and Assistant Coach Larry Peterson for her contribution to the Bucknell women's tennis program, prior to Tuesday's match. Following the loss against the Blue Hens, Bucknell moves to a 9-11 overall record, while Delaware is now 10-7 in 2008.
To open the afternoon, Bucknell won its match at No. 1 doubles, with sophomore Tania Varela (Quito, Ecuador/Alliance Academy) and freshman Lauren Lucido (Woodstock, Md./St. Paul's School for Girls) defeating Susan Pollack and Courtney Fennimore by a score of 8-5, to improve to 11-3 this season. Varela and Lucido now each post a team-high of 12 doubles wins this spring.
Delaware came away with the doubles point, however, as Elena Berry and Amanda Campbell defeated sophomore Carlin Calcaterra (Hinsdale, Ill./Hinsdale Central) and junior Paulina Gamboa (Mexico City, Mexico/Greengates School) by a score of 8-1, at No. 2, and Alexa Dragonette and Ivana Petrich topped Baffa and freshman Dara Dwojewski (Chester, N.J./West Morris Mendham) by a score of 9-7, at No. 3.
In singles, Varela picked up a win for Bucknell at the first position, 3-6, 6-3, 6-2, over Pollack, to bring her season record to 10-4. Freshman Lauren Rottkamp (Cold Spring Harbor, N.Y./Cold Spring Harbor) also picked up a win, topping Dragonette by a score of 1-6, 7-5, 10-8, at No. 6. Rottkamp improved to 12-5 this season, tallying a team-high for singles wins.
Rounding out play, Lucido was defeated by Fennimore, 6-0, 6-2, at No. 2, Berry topped Calcaterra at No. 3, 6-1, 6-0, Campbell went 7-6 (4), 6-1, over Dwojewski at No. 4, and sophomore Renee Weissend (Honeoye Falls, N.Y./Honeoye Falls-Lima) dropped her match at No. 6 to Petrich, 6-1, 6-0.
The Bison are now set to play their final match this season, on the road against Bloomsburg, on Wednesday, April 23, at 6 p.m.
