LEWISBURG, Pa. - Bucknell wraps up its 2008 home schedule on Saturday afternoon at 1 p.m. against high-scoring Lehigh. A live video Webcast will be available on BucknellBison.com and SportsJuice.com.
Before the game, the team will honor its two seniors, Lauren Deitrich and Ashley Flood, who will be playing for the final time at Graham Field.
The Bison snapped a three-game losing streak on Tuesday with a 19-13 victory at Wagner, and they enter Saturday's game with Lehigh at 6-6 overall and 1-4 in the Patriot League.
Series Notes:
Bucknell is 10-19 all-time against Lehigh in a series that dates back to 1978.
The Bison have won the last two meetings, 15-5 at home in 2006 and 13-12 in Bethlehem last season.
In the most recent matchup, Bonnie Buechel scored five goals, Carol Donohue had a goal and four assists, and Alison Heffernan potted the tie-breaking goal with 1:15 remaining.
Scouting Lehigh:
At 3-2 in the Patriot League, Lehigh has clinched a berth in the Patriot League Tournament, and the Mountain Hawks need a win on Saturday to improve their seeding.
The Bison will have to slow down 59-goal scorer Lauren Dykstra. The freshman also has 14 assists for 73 points.
Six Mountain Hawks have 20 or more goals. Sara McIntyre (35) and Ineke Carmola (34) have both topped the 30-goal mark.
Lehigh is averaging 13.9 goals per game and allowing 11.0.
Goalie Kelsy Ferris has a .488 save percentage and 11.34 goals-against average.
Most recently, Lehigh routed Villanova 16-5. The Mountain Hawks have league wins over Lafayette (22-10), Holy Cross (17-9) and Navy (15-12) and losses to American (9-8) and Colgate (19-7).
Last Outing:
Backed by a record-setting day from sophomore Carol Donohue, the Bison routed Wagner 19-13 Tuesday on Staten Island. Donohue had a hand in each of Bucknell's first 10 goals of the day, and she finished with five goals and eight assists for 13 points. She set Bucknell single-game records for both points and assists, and that also allowed her to break the school single-season records in both categories. She wasn't the only one to put up big offensive numbers. Julia Braun scored four goals. Chelsea Peters had three goals and an assist, and Bonnie Buechel and Paige Kasschau both added two goals and one assist.
More on Donohue's Big Day:
Carol Donohue set a number of records on Tuesday when she scored 13 points against Wagner. The previous school record was 12 by Melissa Montefusco in 2002 and Sue Gray in 1984. The lucky 13 total is also the most in the nation this season and tied for ninth-most in NCAA history. The eight assists was one better than Pam Brooks' old school mark, set in 1984, and it tied the Patriot League record, also held by Lafayette's Maddy Booth. Donohue is the third Division I player to have eight assists in a game in 2008, and the total is one shy of the NCAA record. Donohue now has 33 goals and 33 assists for 66 points this season. The previous record for assists in a season was 27 by Meredith Wright in 2003, and the old mark for points in a season was 62, set by Gray 24 years ago. With two games remaining in her sophomore year, Donohue is already third on Bucknell's career assist mark.
Bison Bits:
Carol Donohue (33-33-66) took over the Patriot League lead in both assists per game (2.75) and points per game (5.50), and she is now second in the nation in points per game.
Lauren Deitrich continues to lead the league in caused turnovers with 25 in 12 games. That figure ranks fifth among all Division I players.
Bonnie Buechel and Julia Braun rank 2-3 in the Patriot League in draw controls with 41 and 36, respectively.
Alyssa DeLorenz leads the league in saves per game (10.82).
Bucknell is averaging 13.7 goals per game, which would obliterate the school record. The previous record is 11.4, set in 2004.
Julia Braun, Paige Kasschau and Bonnie Buechel all hit the 20-point mark in the Wagner game. Sarah Collins and Alison Heffernan are sitting on 19 goals.
In the Polls:
Bucknell was picked tied for fifth (with Navy) in the Patriot League preseason poll. American adged defending champion Holy Cross by just two points in the poll, followed by Colgate, Lehigh, Bucknell/Navy and Lafayette.
Looking Ahead:
Bucknell wraps up the 2008 campaign on Wednesday night at Columbia in New York City. The Bison last played Columbia in Davis, Calif., in 2006, and the Lions prevailed 15-4.
