Bucknell Women's Rowing Competes Against Some of Nation's Top Teams

COLUMBUS, Ohio (Griggs Reservoir) - The Bucknell women's rowing team had a tough challenge Saturday when it faced three of the top 15 teams in the nation, but it fared well against No. 9 Tennessee, No. 11 Ohio State and No. 15 Michigan. The Bison varsity four had a third-place showing out of four teams to post the best finish for the Orange and Blue on a day where the races were held going into a strong headwind.

The second varsity eight and novice eight had a pair of impressive performances for Bucknell as well. The second varsity eight ended up finishing fourth in its race, nine seconds behind third-place Michigan, but led the Wolverines about three-quarters of the way through the 2,000-meter race.

The novice eight led its race for the first 1,000 meters, but narrowly finished third in its three-boat race to second-place Ohio State. The Buckeyes timed in at 7:40.2, while the Bison finished in 7:40.7.

The varsity four placed third ahead of Tennessee. The Bison were more than five seconds ahead of the Volunteers.

"I am really proud of our team's composure and how they performed against some of the fastest competition in the nation," said Bison head coach Stephen Kish. "We represented Bucknell well in our first race against each of these teams. It was a good opportunity for us."

The Bison varsity eight, which did not compete in Ohio on Saturday, will be in action at the Knecht Cup on Sunday. The whole squad will be back in action next Saturday, April 19, when the Bison host West Virginia on the Susquehanna River in Shamokin Dam, Pa.
