Bucknell Men's and Women's Track and Field Sends Athletes To Susquehanna Invitational

SELINSGROVE, Pa. - The Bucknell men's and women's track and field teams competed at Susquehanna University's Jim Taylor Invitational on Saturday, to open the 2008 outdoor season. The Bison were led by freshman Matt Bender (Holland, N.Y./Holland Central), freshman Eileen Foley (Herndon, Va./Chantilly) and freshman Casey Krause (Cebanon, Pa./Cedar Crest), who won individual events at the Invitational.
Bender won the 400-meter dash, running a time of 52.24 and went on to have Bucknell's top finish in the 200-meter dash. He placed sixth in the event, stopping the clock at 24.00. In the women's 5,000-meter run, Foley picked up a first-place finish with a time of 18:46.93. Also winning an event was Krause; she led the way in the triple jump, taking first with a distance of 34-10 ½ and went on to place second in the long jump (17-1 ½).
Other top finishers for the women included junior Kim Hassett (Falmouth, Maine/Falmouth) in the 10,000-meter run (third, 38:29.88), sophomore Kalle James-Wintjen (Lewisburg, Pa./Lewisburg) in the 100-meter dash prelim (second, 13.44), James-Wintjen in the 200-meter dash (fifth, 27.65), junior Stacey Haas (Bethlehem, Pa./Liberty) in the 400-meter dash (sixth, 1:05.94) and sophomore Molly Burke (Hastings-on-Hudson, N.Y./Hastings) in the 1,500-meter run (fifth, 5:07.22).
On the men's side, in the 1,500-meter run sophomore Tom Espedal (West Chester, Pa./Henderson) placed sixth with a time of 4:14.19 and in the 5,000-meter run, senior Michael Gibney (Wading River, NY/Shoreham Wading River) took third in 15:43.95. Freshman Jonathan Schmalzle (Hawley, Pa./Wallenpaupack) led Bucknell in the long jump, posting a distance of 19-3/4 for fourth and sophomore Thomas Vogler (Oneonta, N.Y./Oneonta) posted a top distance of 174-9 in the javelin for second.
Bucknell is now set to send athletes to both the Auburn Invitational and the Princeton Invitational, next weekend, April 4-5.
