NEW YORK, N.Y. - Four Bison posted individual wins, including three that came for bonus points, but the Bucknell wrestling team came up short against Columbia on Friday, 21-16. The setback leaves the Orange and Blue at 7-9-1, 2-3 in the EIWA, while the Lions move to 3-3, 2-1 in the EIWA.
Columbia began with a 6-0 lead as 125-pounder Brandon McKinney pinned Greg Hart (Bedminster, N.J./Bernards) in 6:51. Sophomore David Marble (Harpursville, N.Y./Harpursville Central), currently ranked 19th nationally at 133, then responded for the Bison by cutting the deficit to one with a 21-6 technical fall over Nick Standish.
With a major decision by sophomore Luke Chohany (Duncannon, Pa./Susquenita) in the 141-pound bout, Bucknell jumped in front, 9-6. Chohany downed Nick Standish, 13-4, and improved to 4-0 on the year against EIWA foes.
The Lions climbed back on top following back-to-back wins at 149 and 157. Both Kevin LeValley (Hugo, Colo./Limon) and sophomore Brantley Hooks (Spartanburg, S.C./James F. Byrnes) suffered one-point setbacks, LeValley 3-2 against Constantino and Hooks, 4-3 versus Matt Dunn.
The Bison then regained the lead with a 14-3 major decision by 19th-ranked sophomore Andy Rendos (Brockway, Pa./Brockway Area) over Victor Mocco in the 165-pound match-up and stretched it to 16-12 in favor of the Orange and Blue following a 7-0 decision by sophomore 174-pounder Shane Riccio (Warren, N.J./Watchung Hills) against Travis Creagan. Rendos moved 5-0 in the EIWA and Riccio to 4-0, while also extending his duals winning streak to 11 straight.
But that would be all for Bucknell as Columbia closed out the meet by sweeping the final three weights. Kenji Porter defeated freshman David Thompson (West Liberty, Ohio/Graham Local), 3-1, at 184. At 197, sophomore Sean LoCurto (Garden City, N.Y./Garden City) fell to Nick Sommerfeld, 5-2, and in the heavyweight bout George Hingson (Moon Township, Pa./Moon Area) dropped a 3-2 decision to the Lions' Jed Wade.
The Bison will return home next Friday, Feb. 8, to take on Lock Haven in a dual meet beginning at 7 p.m. in Davis Gym.
