LEWISBURG, Pa. - The Bucknell wrestling team held an 18-9 lead heading into the final three bouts, but could not hold on as the squad dropped a 21-18 heartbreaker to Lock Haven at home in Davis Gym on Friday evening. With the loss, the Bison fall to 7-10-1, while the Bald Eagles improve to 8-6.
Lock Haven struck first with a 5-2 decision by John Trumbetti over freshman José Matos (Williamstown, N.J./St. Augustine Prep) at 125 to take a 3-0 lead in the contest.
Then in the 133-pound bout, sophomore David Marble (Harpursville, N.Y./Harpursville Central) answered with a bonus point win for the Orange and Blue. Marble, who is currently ranked 19th nationally, picked up his fourth major decision of the year, downing Billy Ashnault by the score of 12-3.
Sophomore Luke Chohany (Duncannon, Pa./Susquenita) followed with a win by injury default after beginning with a 4-1 lead in his bout against Clint Shirk at 141. This increased Bucknell's advantage to 10-3.
However, back-to-back victories by Matt Fittery and John Mangini for Lock Haven at 149 and 157 brought the Bald Eagles back to within one point in the team score. Freshman Kevin LeValley (Hugo, Colo./Limon) was edged by Fittery, 8-6, in the 149-pound match-up and sophomore Brantley Hooks (Spartanburg, S.C./James F. Byrnes) fell to Mangini, 7-3, at 157.
Sophomore 19th-ranked Andy Rendos (Brockway, Pa./Brockway Area) then gave the Bison some breathing room by collecting a 18-2 technical fall over Derek Caldwell in the 165-pound bout. In the next bout, sophomore 174-pounder Shane Riccio (Warren, N.J./Watchung Hills) added three more points to Bucknell's lead with his 12th straight duals win, a 3-0 decision versus Mike Metzger.
That was the final victory of the night for the Orange and Blue, however. Jeremie Cook pinned freshman Charlie Wonsettler (Scenery Hill, Pa./Bentworth) 2:14 into the 184-pound match-up and sophomore Sean LoCurto (Garden City, N.Y./Garden City) suffered a 7-5 setback to Ben Hepburn at 197 after leading 4-1 early in the match.
With the score tied at 18 heading into the final bout, Bison heavyweight George Hingson (Moon Township, Pa./Moon Area) opened by taking down his opponent Dan Craig. Craig responded with an escape and a takedown of his own before Hingson logged an escape to tie the score at three heading into the second period. The scoring was even again in the second, Hingson with two escapes and Craig with a takedown, but all five points in the third belonged to Craig who registered the 10-5 decision to clinch the win for Lock Haven.
Bucknell will return to action in one week, as the squad will play host to East Stroudsburg in an EIWA dual on Friday, Feb. 15, beginning at 7 p.m.
