LEWISBURG, Pa. - A day after Timothy Medlock (Evan Mills, N.Y./Indian River) was recognized for his record-setting performance at Saturday's Bison Opener, three more Bucknell track & field athletes were singled-out for their performances this past weekend. On Tuesday, Dec. 9, the Patriot League named Evan Novakowski (Duxbury, Mass./Duxbury) Male Track Athlete of the Week and Dan Mularz (Manalapan, N.J./Freehold Township) the Male Rookie of the Week, while Rebecca Frey (Bethlehem, Pa./Liberty) was named Female Field Athlete of the Week. This is the first weekly conference award for both Novakowski and Mularz, and the fourth time that Frey has been honored.
Novakowski, a sophomore, won the 800 meters on Saturday, winning the race in one minute, 58.54 seconds. He also was a part of the Bison's 4 x 400 relay team that finished seventh, crossing the finish line in 3:30.72. As a freshman, Novakowski competed in both the 500 and the 800 running events. His career best in the 800 is 1:58.34, set at the Bucknell Heptagonal, on Jan. 19, 2008. Novakowski is also a member of the men's cross country team.
Mularz had an impressive showing at his first collegiate track meet. He placed 11th in the 60 hurdles, and his time (8.69) is ninth best in Bison history. Mularz placed 13th in the 400 (52.02), and joined Novakowski as a part of the aforementioned 4 x 400 team that finished seventh.
Frey set a new personal best in the pole vault on Saturday, clearing 12 feet to win the event. That mark is fourth best in school history, and qualifies her for the ECAC Championships. Frey won three Patriot League weekly rookie awards in 2007-2008 and was named Second Team All-Patriot League in both the indoor and outdoor track & field seasons. She also received All-East honors last season for finishing eighth at the indoor ECAC Championships. A civil engineering major, Frey is a member of the Patriot League Academic Honor Roll.
The Bison track & field team next competes on Saturday, Jan. 10, 2009, hosting the Gulden Relays at Gerhard Fieldhouse. That is the first of three home events for the Orange and Blue during the month of January.
