PRINCETON, N.J. – Just hours after netting 16 goals against Gannon, the Bucknell men's water polo team managed to find the back of the net just four times against No. 16 Princeton as the Bison lost by an 8-4 score in the semifinals of the Southern Championships Saturday afternoon at DeNunzio Pool. Bucknell, which already earned a berth in the Eastern Championship by virtue of a top-four finish, will face the loser of Saturday evening's Navy-Johns Hopkins game in the third-place game Sunday afternoon at 2 p.m.
Bucknell (15-14), which defeated Gannon 16-5 Saturday morning, fell behind 4-1 in the first quarter and trailed 6-1 at halftime. Princeton had three six-one-five opportunities in the first three minutes of play.
Nick Donahue (Brooklyn, N.Y./Lawrenceville) posted his fifth double-figure save outing of the season as he recorded 10 saves. Richie Hyden (Melbourne, Australia/Greenwich (Conn.)) led the Bison offense with two goals, while Howie Kalter (Durham, N.H./Phillips Academy Andover) and Alex Lampley (Reading, Pa./Governor Mifflin) added one apiece.
Thanks to his two goals, Hyden now has 76 goals, 43 assists and 119 points this season.
Bucknell, which is now 1-2 against Princeton this year, is 4-12 opposite ranked foes this season.
The Bison, who are ranked 20th nationally, will play Sunday at 2 p.m. This is their ninth consecutive year finishing in the top four at the Southern Championships.
