LEWISBURG, Pa. - The Patriot League announced its final weekly awards of the 2008 football season on Monday and a pair of Bison were honored. Bucknell senior Will Carney (Voorhees, N.J./Eastern Regional) was named the league's Special Teams Player of the Week after booting a game-winning field goal in overtime Saturday against Fordham, while junior Greg Jones (Springfield, Va./Lee) earned Patriot League Defensive Player of the Week honors after recording a career-high 17 tackles against the Rams.
On Senior Day at a cold and windy Christy Mathewson-Memorial Stadium, Carney ended his career on a high note, connecting on a 36-yard field goal to push the Bison to a 24-21 overtime victory. It was Carney's second career game-winning overtime field goal, following a 27-yarder against Duquesne in 2006.
Carney, who earned his second career Special Teams Player of the Week citation, finished the season 3-for-4 on field goals and 17-for-20 on extra points. Bucknell's record-holder with 68 consecutive extra points, Carney wrapped up his career with 156 points, among the highest totals by a kicker in Bison annals.
Jones earned his first career weekly honor from the Patriot League after leading the Bison with 17 tackles, including nine solo stops, against Fordham. It was his fourth double-figure tackle game over his last six outings. He finished the season with 89 tackles, which was good for fourth in the Patriot League and paced Bucknell.
Jones, who was a game team captain six times in 2008, excelled in Patriot League play, recording 69 of his 89 tackles against conference opponents. He also posted 2.5 tackles for loss, one interception, one pass breakup and one forced fumble this year.
Carney and Jones are the sixth and seventh different Bison to be honored with a weekly award from the Patriot League this season. Carney joins Sam Nana-Sinkam and A.J. Kizekai as the three Bucknell players to be named Special Teams Player of the Week, while Jones and Nana-Sinkam are the two Defensive Player of the Week winners. Marcello Trigg, Robert De La Rosa and C.J. Hopson are the three other Bison to be honored in 2008 as Bucknell earned nine awards in all.
Thanks to its victory over Fordham on Saturday, Bucknell finished the 2008 campaign with a 5-6 record and finished fifth in the Patriot League with a 2-4 mark.
