LEWISBURG, Pa. - Bucknell men's swimmer Gonzalo DeLeon (Ringwood, N.J./Lakeland Regional) was named Damon's Bison Athlete of the Week, on Monday, Nov. 24. DeLeon won the 200-yard backstroke on Sunday, setting a school record in the process, on his way to helping the Bison men's swimming team to a first-place finish out of five teams at this past weekend's Bucknell Invitational.
A sophomore, DeLeon touched the wall in the 200 back in one minute, 49.33 seconds, breaking the previous record of 1:50.11, held by Steve Droste since 1993. DeLeon's previous best time was 1:51.47, set at the 2008 Patriot League Championships. Also, on Sunday, DeLeon finished second in the 400 IM, and his time of 4:04.90 is third best in Bison history. The Bucknell record in the 400 IM is 4:03.93, set by John Hoffman in 2005. On Saturday, DeLeon competed for the Bison in the 200 fly (1:56.60), placing ninth, and the 200 IM (2:03.10).
DeLeon has now finished first in the 200 back at all five meets the Bison have competed at during the 2008-2009 season. He finished third in the event at the 2008 Patriot League Championships. DeLeon was a 2008 First Team All-Patriot League selection, finishing fourth in the 100 back and eighth in the 200 fly, in addition to his performance in the 200 back. A member of the Uruguay national team, DeLeon also ranks ninth in school history in the 100 back, with a time of 52.03.
The Bucknell men's and women's swimming & diving teams wrapped up the 2008 portion of their 2008-2009 season on Sunday, and will not compete again until Saturday, Jan. 10, 2009, when the Colgate Raiders will pay a visit to Kinney Natatorium. The Bison men have a 4-1 record in dual meets, including a 2-1 record against Patriot League opponents. The Bison women are 5-1 overall, and 2-1 against conference foes.
