ANNAPOLIS, Md. – Howie Kalter (Durham, N.H./Phillips Academy Andover) equaled his career high with four goals and Richie Hyden (Melbourne, Australia/Greenwich (Conn.)) added three goals and three assists as the Bucknell men's water polo team defeated Iona 11-10 Saturday afternoon at the Eastern Championship. The Bison advanced to Sunday's fifth-place game, which will take place at 10:30 a.m. against division rival Johns Hopkins.
Kalter sealed the win for Bucknell (16-16) with a man-up goal with 1:41. He now has seven goals in the two games at the Eastern Championship, which is hosted by Navy.
Hyden's team-high six points moved him past the 200-point plateau for his career as he now has 204, including a team-best 133 this year.
The Bison, who had to come back from a 2-0 deficit, led 9-6 in the third quarter, but the Gaels fought back to tie the game at 10-all in the fourth quarter. Bucknell is now 3-0 against Iona this season with a final-minutes victory and an overtime win.
Nick Donahue (Brooklyn, N.Y./Lawrenceville) made 12 saves in goal for Bucknell, which has won 36 games over the last two years, its highest two-year win total since 1999-2000. Donahue saw his season save figure rise to 207. He now has seven double-figure save outings this year. His stop of a breakaway in the final 30 seconds secured Bucknell's victory.
Johnny Stupp (St. Louis, Mo./Mary Institute) did not tally a point in the win, but was one of four Bison with at least two assists in the contest. He also added a career high-tying four steals.
Bucknell improved to 13-0 when netting at least 10 goals and has a chance to finish above .500 for the third consecutive year with a win Sunday. The Bison have not posted three consecutive records above .500 since 1997-99.
The Bison's win ended a three-game losing streak for them. With a win Sunday against Johns Hopkins, which defeated MIT 10-9 Saturday, Bucknell will finish in the top five at the Eastern Championship for the fifth consecutive season. The Bison are 2-1 against Johns Hopkins this year, but lost the last matchup at the Southern Championships by an 11-9 margin.
