BRONX, N.Y. - The Bucknell women's cross country team participated in the ECAC Championships, in the Bronx, N.Y., on Saturday, Nov. 22. The Bison placed seventh out of 23 teams, finishing with a team score of 214. Columbia placed first with a score of 107, followed by Sacred Heart (118) and Army (120).
Bucknell's Alysha Hooper (Meaford, Ontario/St. Mary's) and Ashley Behre (Flanders, N.J./Mount Olive) led the Bison in the 5K race, finishing 36th and 38th, respectively. Hooper crossed the finish line in 19 minutes, 35 seconds, while Behre was one second behind. New Hampshire's Elizabeth Campbell won the meet in 18:29.
Bucknell freshmen Melissa Smith (46th, 19:45) (Mercer, Pa./Mercer Area), Erin Donaghy (48th, 19:46) (Colts Neck, N.J./Colts Neck) and Kara Weichler (54th, 19:52) (Pittsburgh, Pa./Plum) also scored for the Bison. The Orange and Blue's Jessica Hibbert (55th, 19:52) (Woodbine, Md./Glenelg) and Erin Heidecker (58th, 19:55) (Waterford, Pa./Villa Maria Academy) gave Bucknell seven runners who finished the race in under 20 minutes.
"We really packed up and had a very small time spread among our scoring runners," Bucknell head coach Kevin Donner said. "Our runners really worked well as a team today. Senior Ashley Behre ran the best race of her career today."
The Bison's top runners completed their season last week at the Mid-Atlantic Regional Championships, finishing eighth. The Orange and Blue will now turn their attention to the indoor track & field season, which begins Dec. 6, with the Bison Open. That race will be at the Gerhard Fieldhouse.
