Bucknell Men's and Women's Tennis Open First Day of Bucknell Invitational

LEWISBURG, Pa. - The Bucknell tennis teams opened play at the joint men's and women's Bucknell Invitational on Friday, Oct. 3. In a round-robin style event, the men's team squared off against opponents from Connecticut, Quinnipiac and Wilkes University, while the women's squad faced teams from Colgate, Connecticut and Quinnipiac. The Bison women went 6-2 on the first day of competition, while the men compiled a 5-3 record.
The Bison saw both of their Flight No. 1 players fall in their opening matches, as Ryan Sandburg (Orange, Calif./Canyon) lost 7-5, 6-1, to John Hughes of Quinnipiac, while on the women's side Adrienne Marksion of those same Bobcats defeated Bucknell's Paulina Gamboa (Mexico City, Mexico/Greengates School), 6-2, 6-4. Bucknell was more successful in the Flight No. 2 matches as Zach Hascoe (Greenwich, Conn./Brunswick) defeated Wilkes' Evan Katz, 6-1, 6-1, and Lauren Lucido (Woodstock, Md./St. Paul's School for Girls) beat Colgate's Samantha Inacker, 6-3, 2-6, (10-8).
In more men's action, Bison sophomore Mark Malloy defeated Connecticut's Andrew Marcus, 6-3, 6-1, in Flight No.3, and Jonathan Brenner (Manhasset, N.Y./Chaminade) won his Flight No. 4 match, 6-0, 6-1, against Chris Cozzillio of the Colonels. Senior Daniel Bednarek (Haworth, N.J./Bergen Catholic) was victorious against the Huskies' Scott Warden, 4-6, 6-4, (10-3) in Flight No. 5.
The Orange and Blue's Clark Bogle lost a tough match to the Bobcats' Zach Tuckman in Flight No. 6, 6-3, 6-7, (10-8), and classmate Gregory Maxson (Mt. Pleasant, S.C./Hotchkiss) lost an equally tough match in Flight No. 8, 6-4, 2-6, (10-7), to Tuckman's teammate Vinny Corvari. Bucknell's Jamie Watson (Darien, Conn./Darien) won his flight No. 7 match, 6-0, 6-2, against Brian Fanelli of Wilkes.
On the women's side, Bucknell's Dara Dwojewski (Chester, N.J./West Morris Mendham) lost to Ali Campitello of Connecticut, 6-3, 6-4, in Flight No. 3, but senior Ashley Globerman (New City, N.Y./Clarkstown High School) came from down a set to defeat Erin Finn of Colgate, 3-6, 6-0, (10-8), in Flight No. 4.
Bucknell was victorious in all of its Flight No. 5 - Flight No. 8 matches. Freshman Dumi Iepuras (Moldova/Germantown Friends School) won an intense battle with Katie Moritz of the Huskies, 4-6, 7-5, (10-6), while classmate Courtney Casey (Rockville, Md./Georgetown Visitation) had an easier time with Carly Loewenstein of Quinnipiac, winning 6-2, 6-0. Bison senior Tiffany Card (Little Silver, N.J./Red Bank Regional) beat Colgate's Jen Marquit, 6-4, 6-2, and freshman Liz Larkin (Blue Bell, Pa./Germantown Academy) beat Connecticut's Jenny Marrotta, 6-4, 6-4.
Play resumes Saturday morning and continues throughout the day, before the invitational concludes on Sunday, Oct. 5.
