SOUTHERN PINES, N.C. -- Bucknell joined eight other women's golf teams for 36 holes on day one of the Ross Resorts Invitational at challenging Pine Needles on Monday, and the Bison pieced together rounds of 336 and 328. Playing a terrific course that has hosted three U.S. Women's Opens, most recently in 2007, Bucknell sits in eighth place with three freshmen and a sophomore in the lineup.
The Bison were better in the afternoon, when sophomore Katie Jurenovich (Warren, Ohio/Howland), returning to the lineup after missing several weeks due to illness, posted a team-best 79. Jurenovich, who shot 84 in the morning round, is first among the Orange & Blue and tied for 29th overall after 36 holes.
Also for Bucknell on Monday, freshman Minjoo Lee (Clarkston, Mich./Clarkston) had the best opening round with an 82, but she struggled to a 90 in the afternoon. Senior Deirdre Moran (Bryn Mawr, Pa./Academy of Notre Dame) shot 85-82), freshman Kelsey Meybin (Midlothian, Va./Saint Gertrude) shot 85-84 and freshman Brittany Rendell (Winnetka, Ill./New Trier) carded rounds of 87-83.
Nova Southeastern compiled rounds of 311-307 to grab a two-shot lead over Yale (312-308). Illinois State is third at 628, followed by Augusta State (629), host Rollins (630), Western Michigan (642), Memphis (649), Bucknell (664) and Methodist (666).
Yale's Cassie Boles shot 75-73 to take a two-shot lead over Emilie Geury of Augusta State in the individual standings.
The final round gets underway with an 8:30 a.m. shotgun start on Tuesday.
