PRINCETON, N.J. -
The Bucknell men's and women's cross country teams participated in the Princeton Invitational, in Princeton, N.J., on Saturday, Oct. 18, and the Bison women placed second in a 10-team field. The Bison men's team finished seventh out of 13 teams. Maryland's women's team finished with a score of 26 to win the meet, while the Bison had 53. The men's meet was won by the host Tigers, who had a score of 62. The Bucknell men had a final score of 196.
The Bison women again received strong races from a number of their young runners. Freshman Stephanie Fulmer (Pottstown, Pa./St. Pius X) placed fourth overall in the 6K, with a time of 22 minutes, 25.60 seconds. Maryland's Erin Matyus won the race with a time of 22:02.50, while her teammate, Kristin Reed, placed second (22:11.00). Placing second for the Bison and eighth overall was Fulmer's classmate, Caitlin Cavanaugh (Danville, Pa./Danville Area), who finished eighth with a time of 22:37.50.
Bucknell sophomore Alexa Griffiths (Tamaqua, Pa./Tamaqua) placed 12th (22:41.40), while senior co-captain Gillian Nordquist (Clarkston, Mich./Clarkston) finished 14th (22:43.80). Nicole Falcaro (20th, 23:04.30) (Dingmans Ferry, Pa./Delaware Valley), Alaina Chodoff (24th, 23:08.70) (Cherry Hill, N.J./Cherry Hill East) and Alysha Hooper (26th, 23:14.50) (Meaford, Ontario/St. Mary's) rounded out the scorers for the Orange and Blue.
Bucknell cross country head coach Kevin Donner said, "It was a much better race than at Lehigh 2 weeks ago [for the women's team]. Fulmer is showing great consistency. Cavanaugh and Griffiths bounced back well from average races at Lehigh. Falcaro raced much better than at Lehigh, and it is good to have Alysha Hooper back after sitting out the last two races. Her workouts have gone well and it did not surprise me that she ran so well. Nordquist and Chodoff continue to show nice consistency. Maryland going 1-2 made it tough for us to win, however it was a good setup race for us as we approach the Patriot League Championships."
The Bison men were led by junior co-captain Andrew Huebner (Hampton Falls, N.H./Governor Dummer Acad.), who finished 22nd overall in the 8K with a time of 24:48.30. Baron Willeford (New Orleans, La./Columbia Prep (N.Y.)) placed 37th overall and second for Bucknell (25:08.80), while senior co-captain Clinton Orloski (Butler, Pa./Slippery Rock) finished 43rd (25:11.00).
Rounding out the scorers for the Orange and Blue were Conor McNamara (48th, 25:17.90) (Baldwin, N.Y./Chaminade), Stephen Dorsey (59th, 25:26.20) (North Wales, Pa./La Salle High School), Joshua Clark (71st, 25:43.10) (Vincentown, N.J./Seneca) and Ian Shore (75th, 25:46.40) (South Orange, N.J./Seton Hall Prep).
"Many of our guys ran a much stronger race than at Lehigh 2 weeks ago," Donner said. Willeford had a breakout race and McNamara continues to improve as a cross country runner. Dorsey, Clark and Shore are three sophomores who continue to improve. Orloski was up near the front midway through the race, however he needs to close out that last mile better. Huebner is showing some good consistency as he led our team once again. We did have a few off races from some guys who have consistently been in our varsity top seven and we need them in order to compete with the top teams in the Patriot League in two weeks."
Bucknell will next compete at the Patriot League Championships in Bethlehem, Pa., on Saturday, Nov. 1. The women's team will be trying to claim its fourth consecutive league title, while the Bison men will attempt to improve upon their fourth place finish a year ago.
