LEWISBURG, Pa. – Trying to extend its winning streak to six games and finish its 2008 home slate with a perfect 5-0 record, the Bucknell men's water polo team lost to No. 17 Navy by an 11-6 score Sunday afternoon at Kinney Natatorium. The Bison played five home games in a span of less than 48 hours and posted a 4-1 record and are now 30-16 all-time in their home facility.
Richie Hyden (Melbourne, Australia/Greenwich (Conn.)) led the Bucknell (13-11, 4-3 CWPA) offense with two goals and a pair of assists. He now has 100 points on the season.
Bison goalie Nick Donahue (Brooklyn, N.Y./Lawrenceville) continued his strong weekend with 11 saves. It was his third double-figure save performance of the weekend. Overall, he posted 47 saves in the five games to boost his season total to 136.
Bucknell was able to jump out to a 1-0 lead in the first minute of the game when Gabriel Heiber (Caracas, Venezuela/Miami Beach (Fla.)), who was honored during pregame Senior Day festivities along with classmates Alex Lampley (Reading, Pa./Governor Mifflin) and Alex Lovell (Palos Verdes Estates, Calif./Chadwick), netted his 31st goal of the season.
Hyden brought the Bison to within 4-3 with a five-meter penalty shot goal with 5:20 remaining in the second quarter. Bucknell managed just one more goal the rest of the way until the final two minutes when it tacked on a penalty shot and one other score while Navy (14-7, 6-1 CWPA) was trying to run out the clock.
Heiber drew two ejections in the contest, giving him 50 on the year, which broke his previous school record of 48. Lampley ranks third on that list with a career-high 42 ejections drawn this season.
Johnny Meiners led the Mids with five goals, including three in the fourth quarter.
Bucknell will close out its regular season next weekend at Princeton. The Bison will face the Tigers, a nationally ranked squad they defeated Friday night at Kinney Natatorium, on Oct. 24 at 7 p.m. Bucknell will then play a pair of non-league contests against Brown and St. Francis (N.Y.) on Saturday.
