LOS ANGELES, Calif. - After facing three teams listed in the top 11 of the national rankings in a 24-hour span, the Bucknell men's water polo team concluded the SoCal Tournament with a 14-5 victory over unranked Pomona-Pitzer on Sunday afternoon. The win snapped a five-game losing streak for the Bison, who improved to 9-10 on the season.
Bucknell was the 15th seed entering the tournament and finished in that position. Earlier on Sunday it had lost a hard-fought 9-8 contest to No. 11 Pacific.
Richie Hyden (Melbourne, Australia/Greenwich (Conn.)) led a balanced Bison scoring attack with four goals and two assists. Senior co-captain Gabriel Heiber (Caracas, Venezuela/Miami Beach (Fla.)) added two goals and an assist, while eight other Bucknell players tallied one goal apiece.
After scoring just 17 goals in its first three games in the SoCal Tournament, Bucknell recorded five in the first quarter against Pomona-Pitzer and led 7-2 at the half. The Bison tallied at least two goals in each period, while the Sagehens scored more than one goal in a period just once.
Bucknell's efficient offense scored on 14 of its 26 shots and registered a total of 12 assists, including a team-high three by Sean Coghlan (Chicago, Ill./Brother Rice).
Starter Nick Donahue (Brooklyn, N.Y./Lawrenceville) (5 saves) and Miles Gilhuly (Orinda, Calif./Miramonte) (6 saves) combined to make 11 saves in cage for the Bison.
The SoCal Tournament featured the top 11 teams in the national rankings, and 14 of the top 16. Bucknell and Pomona-Pitzer were the only unranked squads at the event. USC and Stanford squared off for the title on Sunday evening.
The Bison will play at home for the only time this season this coming weekend, Oct. 17-19. They will have five home games over the three days with Sunday's CWPA Southern Division matchups with Johns Hopkins (11 a.m.) and Navy (4:30 p.m.) slated for live video broadcast on Bison Vision.
