CENTER VALLEY, Pa. - Following a thorough review of the game situation, Patriot League Executive Director Carolyn Schlie Femovich announced Monday that Bucknell University men's basketball coach Pat Flannery has been reprimanded and will be suspended for one game.
The one-game suspension was issued to Flannery for a violation of the League's Code of conduct in the game versus Holy Cross on Friday, Jan. 18. The suspension will be in place for Bucknell's game on Wednesday, Jan. 23 versus Lafayette College.
"After comprehensive evaluation with League administrators and game officials, as well as administrators from Bucknell University, I have determined that Coach Flannery violated the League's Code of Conduct. This suspension is a direct result of unacceptable behavior as a coach during a basketball game. The Patriot League requires the highest standards of sporting behavior of coaches, student-athletes and others associated with an athletic competition."
The League office considers this matter closed, and will have no further comment.
Statement from Bucknell head coach Pat Flannery:
"I deeply regret the incident that took place on Friday night. I'm sorry that my actions reflected poorly on Bucknell and the Patriot League and may have overshadowed the courageous performance by our players in a big victory over Holy Cross. They deserve all the credit for battling back to win that game under difficult circumstances. Our attention now is concentrated on preparing them to take on a very good Lafayette team on the road on Wednesday night, and I have the utmost confidence in our staff and players as we battle in Easton.
After being a coach in this League for many years, I look forward to focusing my efforts on the remainder of what promises to be an exciting and challenging schedule while working hard to maintain the high standards of sportsmanship expected by Bucknell and the Patriot League."
