PRINCETON, N.J. - For the second time in two games on Saturday Jason Rechel (Columbus, Ohio/Thomas Worthington) netted a career high as he tallied six goals to lead the No. 13 Bucknell men's water polo team to a 14-6 victory over Iona on Saturday at the Princeton Invitational. Earlier in the day Rechel had established a new career high with five goals in a 14-6 win over Fordham, giving him 11 goals in the Bison's two games Saturday.
Rechel did the majority of his damage in the second half as Bucknell (4-1) overcame a 5-3 first-quarter deficit to win by an eight-goal margin. The Bison outscored the Gaels 10-1 after intermission.
With 11 goals and two assists Saturday, Rechel boosted his season figures to 17 goals and seven assists through just five games. Both of those figures are team highs. He also paces the squad in points with 24, nearly one-third of the way to his total from all of 2006.
Fellow co-captain Kyle Roslyn (Philadelphia, Pa./William Penn Charter) helped Rechel shoulder the offensive load against Iona, contributing three goals, while Alex Lampley (Reading, Pa./Governor Mifflin) added a pair. Lampley also had three steals, one shy of Rechel's team-high figure of four.
Luke Belenky (Kensington, Md./German School) started in goal and equaled his career high with 11 saves. It was the fourth time in his career he reached that plateau.
Bucknell continues play at the Princeton Invitational on Sunday as it faces Mercyhurst and Queens. The Bison defeated the Knights 17-1 last Sunday at the Navy Labor Day Open. With a victory over the Lakers in the first game, Bucknell will equal last year's squad for the best start (5-1) since 1985.
