PRINCETON, N.J. - Jason Rechel (Columbus, Ohio/Thomas Worthington) scored a career-high five goals and added one assist to lead the No. 13 Bucknell men's water polo team to a 14-6 victory over Fordham Saturday afternoon during the first day of the Princeton Invitational at DeNunzio Pool. The Bison will play their second game of the day at 4 p.m. against Iona when they go for their fourth consecutive win.
Six other Bison joined Rechel in the scoring column, including Randy Ang (Hillsborough, Calif./Sacred Heart Prep), who equaled his career high with three goals. Richie Hyden (Riverside, Conn./Greenwich) also netted multiple goals in the winning effort. Hyden recorded a pair of assists as well.
Bucknell's offense was aggressive throughout the game as it launched a season-high 35 shots at the Fordham defense, including 10 by Rechel.
In addition to the impressive offensive output, the Bison were strong on the defensive side of the pool, tallying 16 steals, including four from Kyle Roslyn (Philadelphia, Pa./William Penn Charter). Josh Sunday (Mechanicsburg, Pa./Cumberland Valley), Hyden, Sean Coghlan (Chicago, Ill./Brother Rice) and Alex Lampley (Reading, Pa./Governor Mifflin) each had more than one steal as the Bison fell just one shy of the season-high total of 17 against Queens last Sunday.
At the back of Bucknell's defense was Nick Donahue (Brooklyn, N.Y./Lawrenceville), who made his first career start and recorded a career-high nine saves. He now has a team-high 13 saves on the season and has tied Luke Belenky (Kensington, Md./German School) for the team lead in minutes played at goalie with 56.
The Bison will be back in action at 4 p.m. on Saturday against Iona. Bucknell will face Mercyhurst and Queens on Sunday to conclude the Princeton Invitational.
