LEWISBURG, Pa. - For the second consecutive day Bucknell men's water polo standout Jason Rechel (Columbus, Ohio/Thomas Worthington) was honored with a weekly award as he copped CWPA Southern Division Player of the Week honors on Tuesday. On Monday he earned the Damon's Bison Athlete of the Week.
Rechel, a senior co-captain, had a strong showing at the Navy Labor Day Open on the first weekend of the 2007 season. He registered a six-goal, five-assist performance in the three games and tallied his 100th career goal against No. 2 California, the defending national champion.
The best game of Rechel's weekend came as he led the 18th-ranked Bison to a 10-5 victory over No. 13 Pacific on Saturday. He scored three goals and dished out one assist in the winning effort, which was Bucknell's first-ever win over a team from the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation, the strongest conference in college water polo.
Behind his six-goal output, Rechel finished the weekend with 105 career tallies, second-most among current Bucknell players.
Rechel's 11 points place him atop the Bison scoring column this season, four ahead of second-place Mark Masterson (Kihei, Hawaii/Marin). He also paces the squad in springs, winning 8 of 12, and has a pair of steals.
Bucknell, which is 2-1, has another busy stretch this coming weekend when it plays four games at the Princeton Invitational. The Bison will take on Fordham and Iona Saturday and Mercyhurst and Queens Sunday. The Bison defeated Queens this past Sunday, with Rechel recording one goal and a team-high three assists.
