LEWISBURG, Pa. - Jason Rechel (Columbus, Ohio/Thomas Worthington), a senior co-captain on the Bucknell men's water polo team, was named the Damon's Bison Athlete of the Week on Monday following a six-goal, five-assist performance in three games at the Navy Labor Day Open this past weekend. He also registered his 100th career goal.
Rechel's best game came as he led the 18th-ranked Bison to a 10-5 victory over No. 13 Pacific on Saturday. He registered three goals and one assist in the winning effort, which was Bucknell's first-ever victory over a team from the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation.
Earlier in the day, the Bison had lost to No. 2 California, the defending NCAA champion, but Rechel netted his 100th career goal in that contest. He finished the weekend with 105 career goals, second-most among current Bucknell players.
Rechel's 11 points places him atop the Bucknell scoring column this season, four ahead of second-place Mark Masterson (Kihei, Hawaii/Marin). He also paces the squad in sprints, winning 8 of 12, and has a pair of steals.
Bucknell, which is 2-1, has another busy weekend this coming weekend when it plays four games at the Princeton Invitational. The Bison will take on Fordham and Iona Saturday and Mercyhurst and Queens Sunday.
