LEWISBURG, Pa. - Freshman Richie Hyden (Riverside, Conn./Greenwich) equaled his season high with three goals and Kyle Roslyn (Philadelphia, Pa./William Penn Charter) contributed two goals and a pair of assists as the No. 11 Bucknell men's water polo team defeated No. 20 Brown Saturday morning at Kinney Natatorium. The win advanced the Bison into the semifinals of the ECAC Championship against No. 13 Navy Saturday evening at 7 p.m.
Bucknell struggled early, not building a lead of more than two goals until midway through the third quarter when Gabriel Heiber (Aventura, Fla./Miami Beach) put in a rebound to put the Bison up 6-3. A six-on-five goal from Mike Gartner, who led the Bears with four scores and drew eight ejections, brought Brown to within 7-6 early in the fourth quarter. However, Bucknell netted the final three goals of the contest and the final four-goal margin was the largest of the game.
The victory was the ninth in a row for the Bison, who equaled the sixth-longest winning streak in program history as they improved to 9-1 overall. They are also off to their best start since opening the 1984 campaign 10-1.
Roslyn helped clinch the game for Bucknell, assisting on Jason Rechel's (Columbus, Ohio/Thomas Worthington) goal that gave the Bison an 8-6 advantage and then scoring one of his own less than a minute later.
Bucknell was strong in extra-man situations, converting 3 of 5 chances. Brown was 4 of 9.
Luke Belenky (Kensington, Md./German School) tallied 11 saves and four steals in goal for the Bison. The 11 saves equaled his career high, which he had achieved on four other occasions. He now has a team-high 43 saves this year to give him 251 in his career.
Bucknell will be in action Saturday evening at 7 p.m. against No. 13 Navy at Kinney Natatorium. The Bison have lost 11 consecutive games to the Mids. Their last win over them came at the 2004 ECAC Championship.
