LEWISBURG, Pa. - Playing its second ranked team of the day, the No. 11 Bucknell men's water polo team had its nine-game winning streak snapped it fell by a 9-7 score to No. 13 Navy in the semifinals of the ECAC Championship Saturday evening at Kinney Natatorium. The Bison will play No. 18 Princeton Sunday at 12 p.m. for third-place in the eight-team field.
Bucknell, which is now 9-2 on the season with both losses coming to top-13 teams, fell behind 7-3 in the first half and could not recover as the Mids scored three goals in the first quarter and four more in the second. The Bison did narrow the score to 8-6 early in the fourth quarter on a goal by Mark Masterson (Kihei, Hawaii/Marin), but could not draw closer the rest of the way.
Seniors Masterson and Kyle Roslyn (Philadelphia, Pa./William Penn Charter) led the way with two goals apiece for the Bison. Masterson had been held scoreless earlier in the day during a win over Brown, while Roslyn also posted two goals against the Bears, giving him a team-high four on the day.
Jason Rechel (Columbus, Ohio/Thomas Worthington), Josh Sunday (Mechanicsburg, Pa./Cumberland Valley) and Alex Lampley (Reading, Pa./Governor Mifflin) tallied one goal apiece for Bucknell, while Richie Hyden (Riverside, Conn./Greenwich) added a team-high two assists to vault his season total to 11.
The Bison were just 1 of 5 in six-on-five opportunities, while Bram Arnold led the Mids with three goals.
Freshman Miles Gilhuly (Orinda, Calif./Miramonte) and senior Luke Belenky (Kensington, Md./German School) split time in goal for Bucknell and recorded one save apiece.
With Saturday's loss to Navy, Bucknell has now lost 12 straight against the Mids. Navy advanced to the ECAC Championship and will face St. Francis (N.Y.) Sunday at 1:30 p.m. for the title.
The Bison, who defeated Princeton in a thrilling sudden-death overtime affair at Kinney Natatorium two weeks ago, will try to upend the Tigers for third place at the ECAC Championship on Sunday. Bucknell has finished fourth at the event the last two years.
