LEWISBURG, Pa. -- The Bucknell women's golf team kicks off its fall season at the Nittany Lion Invitational on Sunday at Monday at the Penn State Blue Course in State College. One of 13 teams in a very strong field, the Bison will tee it up for 36 holes on Sunday and 18 more on Monday.
Head coach Kevin Jamieson begins his eighth season at the helm of the Bison women's golf squad, and he will bring three seniors, a sophomore and a freshman to Penn State this weekend.
One of the seniors, Amy Loughney (Macungie, Pa./Allentown Central Catholic), is a two-time All-Big South honoree who posted a 79.9 scoring average last year. Loughney finished T-10th in the Big South Championship in April, one of her five top-10 finishes in 2006-07.
Classmates Kathryn Batchelor (Lawrenceville, N.J./Princeton Day School) and Emily Chiodo (Strasburg, Pa./Lampeter-Strasburg) also lend a veteran presence in the lineup. Sophomore Leah Antkiewicz (Aliquippa, Pa./Quigley Catholic) will play this weekend, and newcomer Katie Jurenovich (Warren, Ohio/Howland) will make her Bucknell debut
Another of Bucknell's top players, junior Deirdre Moran (Bryn Mawr, Pa./Academy of Notre Dame), is studying abroad this fall and will not be available until the spring season.
At the Nittany Lion Invitational, the Bison will go head-to-head with Ball State, Boston College, Maryland, Ohio, Princeton, Rutgers, James Madison, Bowling Green, Western Michigan, William & Mary, Monmouth and Xavier.
Bucknell had a very impressive showing at this event a year ago. The Bison tied a school record with a second-round 314, and their final-round 318 helped them finish sixth (one shot out of fourth) in a similarly difficult 14-team field.
After this weekend the Bison will have four more fall events. They will play in invitationals at Rutgers and Richmond before heading to the Ross Resorts Invitational at Pine Needles Resort in North Carolina, site of the 2007 U.S. Women's Open. Bucknell will finish the fall season at another prestigious event, the Firestone Grill Invitational at Cypress Ridge, which is one of the top-rated courses in Calfornia.
