London, Ontario - The Bucknell men's cross country team took second of 17 teams and the Bucknell women's cross country team finished third of 16 teams at the Western Ontario International Invitational in London, Ontario on Saturday.
The Bison had this past weekend off and on Sept. 8, sent a squad of only freshman to the Bloomsburg Invitational. Going into today's meet, head coach Kevin Donner noted, "Many of our athletes have not raced for three weeks. The meet at Western Ontario will be very competitive with such notable programs as Eastern Michigan and Central Michigan. Most of the top Canadian schools will be there as well. It is a great opportunity for our men to run the longer 10k distance to prepare for NCAA Regionals; the women will run 5k."
On the men's side, Bucknell finished second with 113 points, behind Eastern Michigan in first place with 25 points. Queen's took third (118), followed by Central Michigan in fourth (119), and Western Ontario in fifth (146).
Leading the Bucknell men's team was senior Wallace Campbell (Montgomery, Al./Montgomery Academy). In the 10k race, Campbell finished second in 31:59. Senior Michael Gibney (Wading River, N.Y./Shoreham Wading River) was the next Bison finisher in 22nd (33:14.00), followed by senior Andrew Corral in 25th (33:20.00). Rounding out the top-five runners for Bucknell were sophomore Andrew Huebner (Hampton Falls, N.H./Governor Dummer Academy) in 28th (33:28.00) and junior Donald Sanner (Meyersdale, Pa./Meyersdale).
On the women's side, Bucknell finished third with 57 points behind Guelph in first with 53 points and Western in second with 56 points. Rounding out the top-five teams were Queen's in fourth with 114 points and McMaster in fifth with 153 points.
"It was a very close race," said Donner, concerning the women, "It proved that every place counted. I am very pleased with how our depth is developing, especially with Jennifer Grant, Kim Hassett, and Sarah Moniz."
Junior Nicole Falcaro (Dingmans Ferry, Pa./Delaware Valley) led the Bison women with a fourth-place finish, running the 5k race in 18:49.00. Senior Erin Cranmer-Hart (Slippery Rock, Pa./Slippery Rock Area) finished in 18:53.00 to take seventh, and senior Christine Totten (Perkasie, Pa./Pannridge) took eighth in 18:55.00.
