Lucido And Varela Take No. 2 Doubles Title For Bucknell Women's Tennis At Eastern Championships

WEST POINT, N.Y. - On the third day of the ITA Eastern Championships at Army, freshman Lauren Lucido (Woodstock, Md./St. Paul's School for Girls) and sophomore Tania Varela (Quito, Ecuador/Alliance Academy) of the Bucknell women's tennis team won the final round for the No. 2 doubles flight, taking home the title after a three-day weekend.
Lucido and Varela were the top-seeded players in the second singles flight. The duo faced the No. 2 seed, Katherine Arlak and Christine Tran of Rutgers, in the final round on Sunday, defeating the two, 8-4.
Bucknell's Lucido and Varela started the weekend with a bye in the second doubles flight and went on to defeat Kristen Liu and Whit Squires of Rhode Island, 8-0 on Friday. The duo then faced Katherine Klein and Coleen Speaker (5th-seeded in the No. 2 doubles flight) of West Virginia in the quarterfinal round on Saturday for an 8-3 win. Also on Saturday, Lucido and Varela played Maude Lecluyse and Laura Maurillo of Massachusetts in the semifinal round for an 8-4 win.
The Bison's No. 1 doubles team of sophomore Carlin Calcaterra (Hindsdale, Ill./Hindsdale Central) and junior Paulina Gamboa (Mexico City, Mexico/Greengates School) made the quarterfinal round Saturday after defeating Tina Jacob and Diana Toia of Buffalo, 8-6, and Amy McDevitt and Ayashi Sinha of Providence, 8-1. The duo faced top-seeded Anela Dujsic and Polina Zaretser of Rutgers Saturday and dropped the match, 8-2.
In the second singles consolation flight, sophomore Kirstyn Sotak (Shaker Heights, Ohio/Hathaway Brown) played Ashley Harvey of Long Island in the third round on Saturday. Sotak dropped the match to Harvey, 8-3. Sotak defeated Jessica Ferarra of Siena, 8-4, in the first round, and had a bye in the second round Friday.
The Bucknell women's tennis team is now set to host the Bucknell Invitational Friday Sept 28 - Sunday Sept. 30 in Lewisburg, Pa.
