Women's Tennis Opens With Day One Of Bucknell Invitational

LEWISBURG, Pa. - The Bucknell women's tennis team opened a three-day weekend at the Bucknell Invitational on Friday; the Bison host Villanova, Loyola, Farleigh Dickenson, Buffalo, and Mount Saint Mary's this weekend. Two rounds of doubles were played this afternoon. Saturday will begin with two rounds of singles, followed by one round of doubles.
Sophomore Tania Varela (Quito, Ecuador/Alliance Academy) and freshman Lauren Lucido (Woodstock, Md./St. Pauls School For Girls) led the way for Bucknell in Flight A doubles. Varela and Lucido opened the afternoon with a win over Kaitlin Hallahan and Emma Haley of Mount Saint Mary's (8-4) in the first round. The pair went on to defeat Andreea Novaceanu and Tina Jacob of Buffalo (8-2) and are set to face Jaclyn Williamson and Ashley Reed of Villanova in the semifinal round tomorrow.
Also in Flight A doubles were junior Paulina Gamboa (Mexico City, Mexico/Greengates School) and sophomore Carlin Calcaterra (Hinsdale, Ill./Hinsdale Central). The pair won their first match over Courtney Reed and Emily Urda of Villanova (8-1), but were defeated by Denise Harjonto and Diana Popescu of Buffalo in the next round (8-3).
Freshman Dara Dwojewski (Chester, N.J./West Morris Mendham) and senior Caitlin Baffa (Dix Hills, N.Y./Half Hollow Hills High School East) moved on to the consolation bracket of Flight A doubles, after dropping their first match to Rebecca Poole and Zena Williams of Duquesne (8-1). Dwojewski and Baffa went on to pick up a win over Kerri Swan and Joy Johnson of Loyola (8-5), and will play Hallahan and Haley of Mount Saint Mary's tomorrow.
In Flight B doubles, sophomore Eva Lipiec (Rockaway, N.Y./Poly Prep) and freshman Lauren Rottkamp (Cold Spring Harbor, N.Y./Cold Spring Harbor) made the semifinal round after defeating Carla Erksine and Lyndsey Lostritto of Villanova (8-2), and Lauren Cassle and Andie Keyser-Baker of Loyola (8-3). The duo will face Alexandria Albano and Andrea Sailor of Duquesne tomorrow.
Sophomore Kirstyn Sotak (Shaker Heights, Ohio/Hathaway Brown) and sophomore Renee Weissend (Honeoye Falls, N.Y./Honeoye Falls-Lima) played in the consolation bracket of Flight B doubles after dropping their first match of the afternoon to Smaranda Stan and Aleksandra Petrova of Buffalo (8-3). The duo went on to pick up a win against Ashley Wentzel and Emily Grugan of Mount Saint Mary's (8-2) and are set to play Erksine and Lostritto of Villanova tomorrow.
The Bucknell Invitational will continue Saturday and run through Sunday, Sept. 30.
