LEWISBURG, Pa. - Josh Sunday (Mechanicsburg, Pa./New Cumberland) and Alex Lampley (Reading, Pa./Governor Mifflin) scored three goals apiece and the No. 12 Bucknell men's water polo team tallied double-figure goals for the seventh straight game as it defeated No. 20 Johns Hopkins 11-8 Saturday afternoon at Kinney Natatorium. The Bison improved to a sparkling 7-1 with the victory, their seventh in a row.
Sunday and Lampley both equaled their career highs with their three goals as they helped make up for the high-scoring duo of Jason Rechel (Columbus, Ohio/Thomas Worthington) and Mark Masterson (Kihei, Hawaii/Marin) tallying a combined one goal and one assist. Despite registering just one goal, Rechel, who paces the team with 26 goals, scored with just over a minute left to seal the game and give Bucknell its final 11-8 advantage.
Kyle Roslyn (Philadelphia, Pa./William Penn Charter) and Richie Hyden (Riverside, Conn./Greenwich) added two goals apiece. Roslyn and Lampley combined to have a hand in each of Bucknell's first six goals as it built a commanding 6-2 halftime lead. However, Johns Hopkins closed to within 8-7 early in the fourth quarter. Roslyn and Hyden then scored goals less than a minute apart to put the Bison back up by three goals.
Freshman Miles Gilhuly (Orinda, Calif./Miramonte) started in goal and had a solid showing with seven saves, three steals and a pair of assists. It was his second career start.
By defeating Johns Hopkins, Bucknell upped its winning streak over ranked opponents to three. The Bison are 3-1 opposite ranked foes this year, equaling their total from all of 2006.
With seven consecutive games scoring at least 10 goals, Bucknell has accomplished that feat for the first time since registering double figures in eight straight contests in 1999. Additionally, the Bison have won seven straight games for the first time since reeling off eight in a row in 2004.
Bucknell wraps up its weekend-long homestand Sunday, Sept. 16, with a 12 p.m. game against George Washington at Kinney Natatorium. Live video of the contest will be available for a small fee through BucknellBison.com and SportsJuice.com. Coverage will begin at 11:50 a.m.
