Bucknell Women's Tennis Opens Three-Day Weekend At Army

WEST POINT, N.Y. - The Bucknell women's tennis team wrapped up the first day of the ITA Eastern Championships Friday night at Army, with sophomore Carlin Calcaterra (Hindsdale, Ill./Hindsdale Central) and junior Paulina Gamboa (Mexico City, Mexico/Greengates School) winning two matches in the first doubles flight to make the quarterfinal round.
Calcaterra and Gamboa defeated Tina Jacob and Diana Toia of Buffalo, 8-6, and Amy McDevitt and Ayashi Sinha of Providence, 8-1. The duo will face Anela Dujsic and Polina Zaretser of Rutgers in the quarterfinal round. Dujsic and Zarester are the top-seeded players in the first doubles flight.
Freshman Lauren Lucido (Woodstock, Md./St. Paul's School for Girls) and sophomore Tania Varela (Quito, Ecuador/Alliance Academy) started with a bye in the second doubles flight and went on to defeat Kristen Liu and Whit Squires of Rhode Island, 8-0. Lucido and Varela, the top-seeded players in their flight, are set to face Katherine Klein and Coleen Speaker of West Virginia in the quarterfinal round. Klein and Speaker are seeded fifth in the flight.
In the second singles consolation flight, sophomore Kirstyn Sotak (Shaker Heights, Ohio/Hathaway Brown) will play Ashley Harvey of Long Island in the quarterfinal round after defeating Jessica Ferarra of Siena, 8-4, in the first round, and taking a bye in the second round. Sotak lost her match against Anna Pirevezentseva, 6-3, 6-0, in the second singles flight.
Sophomore Renee Weissand (Honeoye Falls, N.Y./Honeoye Falls-Lima) competed in the first singles flight, dropping the match, 6-2, 6-1, to Christine Ong of Marist. Weissand also fell to Monica Lyskawa of West Virginia, 8-2 in the first singles consolation flight. Lyskawa was the fourth-seeded player in the flight.
Junior Camille Simonetti (Fairport, N.Y./Fairport) dropped her match in the third singles flight, to Tanisha Hodgson of West Virginia, 7-5, 6-0. Hodgson was the third-seeded player in the flight.
The ITA Eastern Championships will continue tomorrow and run through Sunday, Sept. 16.
