LEWISBURG, Pa. -- Overcast skies and a light breeze helped offset predicted hot and humid temperatures, making for a comfortable opening day of preseason football camp at Bucknell on Sunday afternoon at Christy Mathewson-Memorial Stadium.
Just under 100 players, 35 of them newcomers to the program, donned brand new practice jerseys for the initial workout. It was the first of 20 practices prior to the start of classes on Aug. 22. The Bison open the season on Sept. 1 at Duquesne.
The Bison offense spent much of the first practice going over alignments and cadences, while a large number of individual drills were designed to showcase the newcomers skills up close in front of the coaching staff.
The first special teams meeting was still to come on Sunday night, meaning special teams drills are likely to be on the practice agenda for Monday.
"Even though today we just went through some basic offensive and defensive stuff, it felt really good to get out here," said head coach Tim Landis, who is entering his fifth season with the Bison. "Earlier we did our conditioning testing, and I'm very pleased that overall we came back in very good shape.
"We started off with good enthusiasm, even though with so many new faces you do have to slow things down early on in camp. Our first few meetings are really important for the freshmen not just to learn the system but also for them to get used to the coaches' expectations."
Landis indicated that strength testing would begin on Monday, with practice No. 2 slated for 2:30 p.m. at Christy Mathewson-Memorial Stadium.
