MOON TOWNSHIP, Pa. - The Bucknell volleyball team began its weekend on a high note with a 3-0 victory over Robert Morris on the opening night of the Duquesne/Robert Morris Invitational, this Friday evening. With the win, the Bison pull even at 2-2 on the year, while the Colonials drop to 2-2. Bucknell took the games by the scores of 35-33, 35-33 and 30-20.
Senior Jenna Henderson (Elk Grove, Calif./Laguna Creek) totaled a team-best 17 kills and 10 digs for her second double-double of the season to lead the Orange and Blue. Junior Emilie Hardinge (Darien Conn./Darien) followed with 12 kills and hit .303 (12-2-33) with seven digs and freshman Heidi Kamp (Springfield, Ore./Henry D. Sheldon) posted nine kills and just one error in 14 attempts for a .571 attack percentage and registered six service aces. Junior setter Shannon Pitsch (Oak Brook, Ill./Fenwick) aided the offense with 40 assists, while sophomore Allison Gittings (Dayton, Md./Glenelg) and freshman Jocelyn VanOpdorp (Williamsville, N.Y./Williamsville) chipped in defensively with eight and seven-dig totals, respectively.
"We had a fairly balanced attack," commented Bucknell head coach Cindy Opalski. "We received contributions from several different people. One bright spot in particular on the defensive side was Jocelyn, who played the entire second and third games and performed strongly. In addition, we served well, which took Robert Morris out of its system."
For the Colonials, Cassie Lee recorded 16 kills, Emily Wolthuis had 14 and Jennifer Stambaugh, 13. Tawnya Storino compiled 40 assists and Alaina Gibson had a match-best 19 digs.
The Bison will continue play in the Duquesne/Robert Morris Invitational as they will take on UNC Greensboro and Duquesne tomorrow, Sat. Sept. 1, at 4 p.m. and 7 p.m.
