LEWISBURG, Pa. - Senior Wallace Campbell (Montgomery, Ala./Montgomery Academy) led the Bucknell men and senior Christine Totten (Perkasie, Pa./Pannridge) was the first-place finisher for the Bison on the women's side as the orange and blue started the 2007 cross country season at home with the Bison Open this afternoon.
Bucknell hosted Susquehanna, Scranton, and Kutztown for the 3-mile race. The Bison swept eight of the top-10 placements for the men, and seven of the top-10 placements for the women.
Campbell won the meet in 14 minutes, 40.85 seconds followed by senior teammate Michael Gibney (Wading River, N.Y./Shoreham Wading River) in second with a time of 15:03.54.
Rounding out the top-five finishers on the men's side were sophomore Andrew Huebner (Hampton Falls, N.H./Governor Drummer) and junior Clinton Orloski (Butler, Pa./Slippery Rock), taking fourth and fifth respectively. Huebner clocked in at 15:09.71 and Orloski finished in 15:11.97.
"We had a solid performance from our guys," said head coach Kevin Donner, "There were a few individuals that we thought would be in front that were not, but we also had a few guys step up. I was pleased with our freshmen. I feel that they have been able to make a smooth transition into collegiate running."
On the women's side, the top-five places were claimed by Bison runners. Totten led the way in 17:37.28 followed by junior Nicole Falcaro (Dingman's Ferry, Pa./Delaware Valley) in second with a time of 17:39.64, and junior Gillian Nordquist (Clarkston, Mich./Clarkston) in third (17:47.86).
Freshman Alexa Griffiths (Tamaqua, Pa./Tamaqua) and senior Erin Cranmer-Hart (Slippery Rock, Pa./Slippery Rock Area) took fourth (17:52.13) and fifth (18:02.47) respectively.
"Our ladies were very solid," noted Donner, "For four of our girls to finish in under 18 minutes is fairly the same as our performance in this meet last season. I am very pleased with some of our younger athletes, particularly Alexa Griffiths and Sarah Moniz (11th; 18:31.57). Of our veterans, I think Jennifer Grant really pulled through (eighth; 18:16.68).
The Bison are now set to travel for the Bloomsburg Invitational next weekend, scheduled to begin at 10 a.m. on Saturday.
