LEWISBURG, Pa. - The Bucknell men's water polo team will begin the 2007 season the same place it ended 2006 - nationally ranked. The Bison are ranked 18th in the country, according to the Collegiate Water Polo Association (CWPA) preseason poll, which was released recently. The squad, which posted a 15-13 record in 2006, wrapped up last year also ranked 18th.
Bucknell, which totaled 14 points in the voting, is ahead of fellow CWPA teams Brown and Johns Hopkins, which tallied three points apiece and are listed in the also receiving votes category. CWPA Southern Division members and conference rivals Navy (No. 11) and Princeton (No. 15) are slightly ahead of the Bison.
The top 10 teams, and 12 of the top 13, are located in California, with USC being the unanimous choice as the No. 1 team in the country.
Bucknell, which was rated 17th in last year's preseason poll, opens the season next weekend, Sept. 1-2, at the Navy Invitational. The Bison lost just two seniors from last year's squad that finished fourth at the Eastern Championship.
