LEWISBURG, Pa. - Senior Matthew Forys, of the Bucknell men's track and field team, finished 17th with a time of 8 minutes, 47.93 seconds in the 3,000-meter steeplechase, which was a new personal best, at the 2007 NCAA Championships in Sacramento, Calif., at Hornet Stadium on the campus of Sacramento State. However, his time was not enough to qualify for Friday's final.
Forys, who earned an at-large bid to the NCAA Championships, ended his senior campaign as one of the top distance runners in the Patriot League. In the indoor season, he won the 3,000 and 5,000 at the Patriot League Championships and was named the Track Athlete of the Meet. He also set a new meet record in the 3,000. The Howell, N.J., native, became the first male Bison athlete to win an IC4A Indoor Championship title in school history by winning the 3,000. He ranks second and fourth at Bucknell in the 3,000 and 5,000, respectively.
In the outdoor season, Forys continued his strong performance by posting a first-place showing in the 10,000 at the Patriot League Championships, while also finishing second in the steeplechase. He continued on to place seventh in the steeplechase at the NCAA East Regional Championships. Although he didn't make the final at the NCAA Championships, his time ranks second all-time at Bucknell behind Hall of Famer and All-American Rick Sayre, who established the record in 1980.
