Bucknell's Varsity Lightweight Eight Wins Heat at IRA National Championship, Advances to Saturday's Grand Final

CHERRY HILL, N.J. (Cooper River) - The Bucknell women's rowing varsity lightweight eight advanced to the finals of the IRA National Championship Regatta for the second consecutive year by winning its heat Friday morning on the Cooper River. The Bison recorded a time of 6 minutes, 40.663 seconds to edge out Princeton's varsity lightweight eight by just over one-tenth of a second and earn an automatic berth in Saturday afternoon's Grand Final.
Bucknell, which will be making the second Grand Final appearance in program history, and Princeton recorded the top two times of the 12 boats that competed in the heats. The Tigers, who also automatically advanced to Saturday's Grand Final, finished in 6:40.787. Stanford took third in the heat in 6:45.069, while Long Beach State (7:08.946), Central Florida (7:12.215) and Lehigh (7:16.872) rounded out the six-boat field. The top two teams in each of the two heats automatically advanced to the Grand Final, while the other four boats in each heat will compete in Friday afternoon's Repechage. The winners of each Repechage advance to the Grand Final, while the rest go on to Saturday's Petite Final.
The Bison boat consisted of Jeweliet Yost (coxswain), Lauren Olsen (stroke), Laura Roberts (7), Kim Weaver (6), Whittney Henry (5), Jessica Glenn (4), Devon Mitchell (3), Gillian Carter (2) and Meredith Henry (bow).
Radcliffe, which won the other heat in 6:43.508, and Wisconsin, which took second in 6:47.034, also automatically advanced to the Grand Final on Friday morning.

Bucknell will conclude its outstanding 2007 spring season with Saturday afternoon's Grand Final, which is schedule to begin at 2:27 p.m. The Bison placed sixth in the Grand Final in 2006, the best IRA finish in program history.
