LEWISBURG, Pa. - Senior distance runner Matthew Forys (Howell, N.J./Howell), of the Bucknell men's track and field team, earned an at-large bid to the 2007 NCAA Championships after his seventh-place performance at the NCAA East Regional Championships in the 3,000-meter steeplechase, which was announced on Tuesday. The NCAA Championships will begin on Wednesday, June 6, in Sacramento, Calif., at Hornet Stadium on the campus of the Sacramento State.
Forys became the fifth Bison male athlete to qualify for the NCAA Championships and the first since 1996 when All-American Jim Heizman finished 13th in the hammer throw. He also became the first Bison distance runner in 25 years to qualify for the championships, the last being All-American and Hall of Famer Bill Reifsnyder, who placed 17th in the 10,000 in 1982.
Forys kick-started his senior outdoor campaign by winning the steeplechase with a time of 8 minutes, 50.10 seconds Sam Howell Invitational, which currently ranks second all-time at Bucknell. The Howell, N.J., native followed that performance with two second-place showings at the Bison Outdoor Classic and the Bucknell Team Challenge in the 5,000 and the 1,500, respectively. At the Patriot League Championships, Forys earned First Team All-Patriot League honors after winning the 10,000 with a time of 30:55.92. He also placed second in the steeplechase with a time of 9:01.03.
