LEWISBURG, Pa. - Earlier this week five Bucknell women's rowers were named National Scholar-Athletes by the Collegiate Rowing Coaches Association (CRCA). Seniors Meredith Henry (Milford, Pa./Delaware Valley), Laura Roberts (Canonsburg, Pa./Peters Township) and Susan Shadle (Bethlehem, Pa./Freedom), along with juniors Sophie Bird (Lincolndale, N.Y./Somers) and Jennie Trayes (Hawley, Pa./Wallenpaupack), were the five Bison honored.
The CRCA recognizes student-athletes who are at least sophomore standing, have a cumulative grade-point average of at least 3.50 and have been members of the institution's NCAA or IRA eligible boats for a minimum of 75% of the spring season.
"The National Scholar-Athlete Award exemplifies the scholar-athlete model that Bucknell strives for and these five women stand as great examples for the rest of their team and all other athletes at Bucknell," praised Bison head coach Stephen Kish, who was recently named the Mid-Atlantic Region Coach of the Year. "They have made both the team and the University proud."
Bucknell's five honorees spanned all three of the Bison varsity boats. Bird and Roberts were key members of the second varsity eight this year. Bird, an economics and psychology double major, sat six-seat, while Roberts, a mechanical engineering major, was in the seven-seat.
Henry and Shadle were part of the varsity four. An animal behavior major, Henry was the three-seat, while Shadle, a biology and psychology double major, sat bow.
Trayes, a Spanish and economics double major, represented the varsity eight. She was the seven-seat of the successful boat that was named Boat of the Year at the Patriot League Championship.
The scholar-athlete award winners helped Bucknell's varsity eight, second varsity eight and varsity four to victories over crews from Georgetown, Rhode Island, Boston College, Penn, Dartmouth, Navy, Buffalo and Massachusetts, among others, this year. All five rowers won boat titles at both the Patriot League Championship and the ECAC Metro Championship and contributed to the team titles at both events.
Henry and Roberts will row as part of the varsity lightweight eight at the IRA Championships, June 1-2, on the Cooper River in Cherry Hill, N.J.
