Bison Track and Field Teams Prepare for ECAC and IC4A Outdoor Championships

LEWISBURG, Pa. - The Bucknell men's and women's track and field squads will compete in the three-day 2007 ECAC and IC4A Outdoor Championships starting on Friday, May 11, at the William Weaver Track and Field Stadium, on the campus of Princeton University. The Bison women, who are coming off their fourth straight Patriot League Outdoor Championship, had individuals qualify for 15 events, while the men, who finished second at the league championships, will have athletes in 18 events.
The men will be led on the track by senior Matthew Forys (Howell, N.J./Howell), junior Wallace Campbell (Montgomery, Ala./Montgomery Academy), along with sophomores Kerry Boyle (Hazleton, Pa./Hazleton) and Kevin Macleod (East Longmeadow, Mass./East Longmeadow), and freshman Andrew Yehl (Elizabethtown, Pa./Elizabethtown).
Forys has qualified for the 1,500-, 5,000-, 10,000- and 3,000-meter steeplechase. His times of 8 minutes, 50.10 seconds and 14.07.83 in the 3,000 steeplechase and 5,000, respectively, qualified him for the NCAA East Regional Championships. He also won the 10,000 at the Patriot League Championships with a time of 30:55.92 this past weekend.
Campbell qualified for the 5,000 at the Bucknell Team Challenge with a time of 14:30.09. He also qualified for the 10,000 with a time of 30:56.56 at the league championships.
Boyle posted a new school record in the 200 with a time of 21.24 at the league championships, which qualified him for the IC4A Championships. He also qualified for the 400 with a time 47.54 at the Bucknell Team Challenge.
MacLeod has qualified for the 110 and 400 hurdles this weekend. His time of 52.60 in the 400 hurdles at the Patriot League Championships won him the event and ranks him second all-time at Bucknell.
Yehl became an IC4A Championship qualifier this past weekend at the league championships when he ran a time of 14.84 in the 110 hurdles. The Bison also earned spots in the 4x100, 4x400 and 4x800 relays.
In the field, seniors Nick DeGregorio (Ridgewood, N.J./Bergen Catholic), along with junior David Mante (Warwick, N.Y./Warwick Valley) and freshman Kyle Anthony (Barryville, N.Y./Eldred Academy) will look to for a strong showing.
Hoffman threw for a distance of 206 feet, 2 inches (62.84m) in the hammer at the Patriot League Championships, which won him the event. His mark also qualified him for the NCAA East Regional Championships, which he ranks sixth in the region.
Kaehler was named the Male Field Athlete of the Meet at the league championships after he threw for a distance of 230-6 (70.27m) in the javelin, which won him the event. His mark was a new Patriot League meet and Bucknell record. He currently ranks third in the East Region.
DeGregorio qualified for the IC4A Championships in the shot put with his toss of 51-7 ¾ (15.74m) at the league championships, which was good for fourth place.
Mante cleared a height of 16-2 (4.95m) at the Bucknell Team Challenge to qualify for the championships. He also won his first Patriot League outdoor gold medal in the event this past weekend.
Anthony qualified for the IC4A Championships in the long jump at the Tiger Track Classic with a distance of 23-10 (7.26m) and posted a 48-9 ½ (14.87m) mark in the triple jump. He was awarded with the Male Rookie of the Meet honor for his silver medal finish in both events at the Patriot League Championships.
On the women's side, seniors Christa Sawko (Montoursville, Pa./Montoursville Area), Catherine Trentacoste (Garden City, N.Y./Garden City), Leanna Nastase (Beaverdale, Pa./Forest Hills) and junior Christine Totten (Perkasie, Pa./Pennridge) will lead the Orange and Blue on the track.
Sawko, who has six Patriot League titles, has qualified for the 800 and 1,500 with times of 2:09.35 and 4:32.85, respectively. Her time in the 800 is also an NCAA East Regional mark. At the league championships last weekend, she took gold in both events.
Trentacoste qualified for the ECAC Championships in the 100 and 400 hurdles. Her time of 14.14 at the league championships in the 100 hurdles was a new Bucknell record, which was good for second place.
Nastase became an ECAC qualifier in the 5,000 after she ran a time of 17:21.94 at the Bison Outdoor Classic. She qualified for the 10,000 with a time of 36:35.75 at the Patriot League Championships.
Totten won the 3,000 steeplechase at the Patriot League Championships with a time of 11:05.15 to qualify for the championships. The junior also qualified for the 10,000 at the Jim Taylor Invitational with a time of 37:24.45. Bucknell will also have athletes competing in the 4x400 and 4x800 relays.
In the heptathlon, senior Nina Reinhardt (Northport, N.Y./Northport) scored 4,630 points at the Patriot League Championships to earn a spot in the ECAC Championships. She currently ranks fourth all-time at Bucknell.
Leading the charge in the field events will be seniors Melanie Buczko (Butler, Pa./Butler Area), Angie Hall (Elkton, Md./Rising Sun), Marjorie Grap (Van Etten, N.Y./Spencer-Van Etten), Kathleen Hart (Delmar, N.Y./Bethlehem Central), along with juniors Amanda Mockbee (Hudson, Ohio/Hudson) and Beverly Rogers (Finleyville, Pa./Ringgold), and freshman Amy Mantush (Drums, Pa./Hazleton).
Buczko qualified for the ECAC Championships when she cleared a height of 12-7 ½ (3.85m) in the pole vault at the Bucknell Team Challenge, which also made her a qualifier for the NCAA East Regional. Hall also qualified for the championships after she notched a height of 11-11 ¾ (3.65m). Grap, Hart and Mockbee give Bucknell a trio of strong discus throwers at the ECAC Championships.
Grap has qualified for the hammer and the discus this spring. Her throw of 189-9 (57.83m) in the hammer at the Patriot League Championships also qualified her for the NCAA East Regional. In the discus, Grap took first at the league championships with a mark of 151-3 (46.10m). Hart posted a distance of 148-5 (45.03m) in the discus at the championships to qualify her for the ECAC Championships. Mockbee holds the best discus mark in the league with a distance of 152-1 (46.38m), which she earned while at the George Mason Classic.
Rogers threw for a mark of 154-3 (47.03m) in the javelin at the Patriot League Championships, which was good for second place and broke her own school record. Her distance in the event qualified her for the NCAA East Regional.
Mantush, who won the high jump at the league championships, qualified for her the event at the Bucknell Team Challenge when she broke the school record with a height of 5-7 (1.70m).
On May 25-26, Bucknell will compete in the NCAA East Regional Championships in Gainesville, Fla., on the campus of the University of Florida.
