Bucknell Women's Tennis Team Prepares for Patriot League Championships

LEWISBURG, Pa. - On Saturday, Apr. 28, in Bethlehem, Pa., the Bucknell women's tennis squad will participate in the 2007 Patriot League Women's Tennis Championships on the campus of Lehigh. The Bison, the No. 3 seed, will play No. 6 Holy Cross in the quarterfinals at 1 p.m. The winner of the match will battle No. 2 Colgate in the semifinals. In the second quarterfinal, No. 4 Lafayette will face No. 5 Lehigh with the winner of the match playing No. 1 Army. The semifinal matches will be held on Sunday, Apr. 29, beginning at 10 a.m.
Leading the Bison will be freshman Tania Varela (Quito, Ecuador/Alliance Academy) and sophomores Paulina Gamboa (Mexico City, Mexico/Greengates) and Ashley Globerman (New City, N.Y./Clarkstown)
Varela ended the regular season with an 8-4 record with a 5-2 showing in the No. 1 spot. Three of the victories came against Patriot League opponents. Gamboa has tallied a 9-11 mark while playing in the No. 1 and No 2 spots of the lineup. She is the only Bison to go 4-0 in league competition. Globerman has played in the No. 2 thru the No. 4 spots of the lineup notching a record of 6-10. In league play, she has a mark of 3-1.
Looking to make an impact for Bucknell will be junior Caitlin Baffa (Dix Hills, N.Y./Half Hollow Hills), sophomore Camille Simonetti (Fairport, N.Y./Fairport), along with freshmen Kirstyn Sotak (Shaker Heights, Ohio/Hathaway Brown) and Carlin Calcaterra (Hinsdale, Ill./Hinsdale Central).
Baffa has tallied a 3-5 outing this spring while playing in the No. 4 thru the No. 6 spots. Simonetti produced a mark of 2-3 this spring, with a 1-1 record against league foes. Sotak has accumulated a record of 6-10 while playing in the No. 3 thru the No. 6 spots. She has a 3-1 mark in the Patriot League. Calcaterra has also notched six singles victories this season.
In doubles, Calcaterra teamed with Gamboa to produce a 7-12 showing with a 2-1 mark in the league, while playing in the No. 1 and No. 2 spots. Globerman and Varela have paired together to also win seven matches this spring, while Baffa and Simonetti posted a 3-3 record in doubles.
