WORCESTER, Mass. - The Bucknell baseball squad dropped both of its games against Holy Cross in Patriot League action on Fitton Field on Sunday afternoon. Following the pair of setbacks, the Bison are now 14-22, 6-10 in league contests, while the Crusaders move to 10-18, 7-7 in the Patriot League.
In game one, Holy Cross took a 2-0 lead in the second inning as Andrew Tenaglia and Matt Perron both scored on an error with two outs after reaching with a walk and a single, respectively.
The Crusaders added two more in the third on a two-RBI double by Kyle Lister that drove in Tyler Stampone and Norm Roth. Then in the sixth, Jake Gorman brought in the fifth and final run with an RBI single that plated Tim Hughes.
Bucknell had opportunities to score in the first and again in the sixth inning. Freshman Ben Yoder (Belleville, Pa./Indian Valley) and junior Mark Angelo (Quakertown, Pa./Quakertown) both knocked singles in the first, but the Bison stranded two runners in the frame. In the sixth, sophomore Dane Grandizio (Bloomsburg, Pa./Bloomsburg) led off with a double and Angelo and junior Chris Pieper (Port Washington, N.Y./Schreiber) drew walks to load the bases, but Bucknell was unable to push across a run.
Junior Matthew Wilson (Toronto, Ontario/Northern S.S.) worked all six innings for the Orange and Blue and took the loss (3-4) as he surrendered five runs, three earned, on eight hits with four walks and four strikeouts. Bobby Holmes earned the victory (1-0) for Holy Cross as he scattered five hits over six shutout innings with two walks and four strikeouts.
After three scoreless innings in game two, the Crusaders offense erupted for eight runs on five hits in the bottom of the fourth.
Bucknell responded by taking one back in its next turn at bat as three straight singles by Grandizio, Yoder and senior Ryan Gryskevicz resulted in a run. That would be all the Bison would manage, however, and Holy Cross followed up with five in the bottom of the fifth and two in the sixth to roll to the 15-1 win.
Starter Andy Campbell (Mill Valley, Calif./Marin Catholic) suffered the setback (1-1) for the Orange and Blue. He pitched 3.1 innings and allowed three runs on four hits with one walk and two strikeouts. Ryan George registered the decision (1-3) for the Crusaders after allowing one run on five hits with three walks and two strikeouts over five innings on the mound.
Yoder and Grandizio were the lone Bison to tally multiple hits on the day, both finishing with two apiece in the twinbill. Grandizio also knocked his 12th double of the year and scored a run.
Bucknell will return to action this Wednesday, Apr. 25, for its final home date of the season with a single game against Towson slated for 3:30 p.m. on Depew Field.
