PRINCETON, N.J. (Lake Carnegie) - Facing its toughest competition of the season, the Bucknell women's rowing team had a strong performance Saturday on Lake Carnegie against Princeton, Dartmouth and Penn. The Bison fours had the best place showings as the second varsity four beat Princeton and the varsity four took second to the Tigers in a four-boat field.
While the fours finishes were the most impressive in the standings, the eights had a successful day as well, hanging with their nationally ranked opponents. Princeton's varsity eight, the defending national champion, is ranked seventh in the latest Collegiate Rowing Coaches Association/US Rowing poll, while Dartmouth is 14th.
The varsity eight of Jeweliet Yost (coxswain), Kelly Henkler (stroke), Jennie Trayes (7), Katherine Brewster-Duffy (6), Christine Drasba (5), Betsy Schneider (4), Page Kannor (3), Caitlin Doolin (2) and Whittney Henry (bow) took fourth in its four-boat race with a time of 6 minutes, 48.8 seconds. However, that time was only nine seconds behind first-place Princeton. Dartmouth (6:41.6) and Penn (6:44.5) claimed second and third, respectively.
In a tightly contested race, the second varsity eight of Katie Kessler (coxswain), Lauren Olsen (stroke), Devon Mitchell (7), Sophie Bird (6), Renee Alemi (5), Brittany Kaplan (4), Meghan Murphy (3), Olivia Knodt (2) and Erin Henry (bow) took third in 7:02.7, edging out Penn by less than one second. Dartmouth was second in 7:00.9, while Princeton won the race in 6:51.1.
The second varsity four picked up its win in a head-to-head race with Princeton as it crossed the line in 8:03.3, more than seven seconds ahead of the Tigers. The Bison second varsity four consisted of Lauren Weinstein (coxswain), Jessica Glenn (stroke), Cara Cox-Steiner (3), Beth Mooney (2) and Amy VanNostrand (bow).
The varsity four of Lauren Yee (coxswain), Gillian Carter (stroke), Susan Shadle (3), Elizabeth Regan (2) and Amanda Gallina (bow) placed second in its race, ahead of third-place Dartmouth. Princeton won the event, while Penn was fourth in the four-boat field.
Both the Bison novice eight and novice four rowed well despite finishing fourth and third, respectively. The novice eight of Lauren Lesko (coxswain), Kerry Sullivan (stroke), Diana McCullough (7), Meghan O'Reilly (6), Sarah Germani (5), Kim Weaver (4), Sara Baughn (3), Justine Bailey (2) and Lauren Hallanan (bow) finished its race in 8:10.8. Penn entered a pair of boats in the race and took first and third, while Dartmouth earned runner-up honors.
The novice four race was spread out as nearly 25 seconds separated first from second place and second from third. Princeton, which won four of the six races on the day, won in 8:04.8. Dartmouth, which was the only team not to win at least one of the six races, took second in 8:28.5, while Bucknell rounded out the field in 8:53.2. The Bison novice four was comprised of Mary Wilson (coxswain), Kate Courtien (stroke), Stefanie Marquette (3), Jen Butler (2) and Chrissy Friedlander (bow).
"From the novice eight to the varsity eight, I am very proud of the way the whole team approached today and for what they accomplished today," stated Bucknell head coach Stephen Kish. "It was special for the second varsity four to come to Princeton for a race and come away with a win."
Bucknell will close out the home portion of its schedule next Saturday, April 28, when it hosts local foes Penn State and Susquehanna on the Susquehanna River. The event, which will feature novice four, novice eight and varsity four races, will begin at 9 a.m. Also next weekend, the Bison will travel to Lake Quinsigamond in Worcester, Mass., for the Patriot League Championship. Bucknell won the team title last year when the varsity eight was named Boat of the Year and head coach Stephen Kish earned Coach of the Year honors.
