LEWISBURG, Pa. - Junior Jason Buursma (Seattle, Wash./Lakeside School) was named the Damon's Bison Athlete of the Week on Monday after helping the Bucknell baseball team to a 4-1 record last week with his performances both at the plate and on the mound.
As the squad's designated hitter, Buursma extended his current hitting streak to nine games, hitting safely in all five last week for a .471 average (8-for-17). He tallied a team-best six RBI and six runs scored along with four doubles and five walks as the Orange and Blue took three of four games at Lehigh and won a mid-week contest at home against Scranton, 8-0.
Buursma also made three appearances on the mound as the reliever struck out all three batters he faced versus the Royals on Wednesday, fanned five and picked up the victory in Bucknell's 8-7 extra-inning affair against the Mountain Hawks and came on with the bases loaded against Lehigh in Sunday's game one and recorded the save after logging the final two outs in the 3-2 win. For the week, Buursma totaled 5.1 scoreless innings and allowed three hits with two walks and nine strikeouts. His save was his third of the season and 13th of his career to move him within one of tying the Bison career mark.
Bucknell, currently 10-11 overall (3-1 PL), is set to travel to Penn State this Tuesday, Apr. 3, for a 7 p.m., contest. The Bison will resume Patriot League play at home this Saturday and Sunday, Apr. 7-8, against Army with each doubleheader beginning at noon on Depew Field.
