Bucknell Women's Tennis Defeats Bloomsburg, 4-3

LEWISBURG, Pa. - The Bucknell women's tennis team squeaked past Bloomsburg, 4-3, in its non-league match on Wednesday at the Bucknell Varsity Tennis Courts. The Bison improved to 6-13 (2-2 PL), while the Huskies fell to 16-2, on the season. Bucknell will play its final regular season match on Saturday, Apr. 21, against UMBC, in Baltimore, Md. The match will begin at 12 p.m.
In singles, freshman Tania Varela (Quito, Ecuador/Alliance Academy) posted her fifth No. 1 singles win of the season over Emily Murphy, 6-4, 6-2. She is now 8-3 this spring. Freshman Carlin Calcaterra (Hinsdale, Ill./Hinsdale Central) rallied back to beat Iida Hokkanen in three sets, 5-7, 6-2, 6-4, in the No. 3 spot.
Freshman Kirstyn Sotak (Shaker Heights, Ohio/Hathaway Brown) took down Tracy Nissenbaum, 6-0, 6-3, in the No. 6 spot, for her sixth victory of the spring, while junior Caitlin Baffa (Dix Hills, N.Y./Half Hollow Hills) notched a 6-4, 7-5 defeat over Allison Carney in the No. 5 Spot.
Sophomore Paulina Gamboa (Mexico City, Mexico/Greengates) had her six-match winning streak snapped in the No. 2 spot against Katie Hasyn, 6-3, 6-3, while sophomore Ashley Globerman (New City, N.Y./Clarkstown) fell to Tori Cunningham, 7-6(12), 6-4, in the No. 4 spot.
The team of Varela and Globerman were defeated by Hokkanen and Murphy, 8-4, in the No. 1 spot, while Baffa and sophomore Camille Simonetti (Fairport, N.Y./Fairport) lost in the No. 3 spot to Carney and Cunningham. The duo of Calcaterra and Gamboa posted the lone Bison doubles victory in the No. 2 spot, 8-6, against Nissenbaum and Hasyn.
